Merely hours after Narok Senator, Ledama Olekina on Thursday, August 10 expressed interest in working with Mercy Tarus, a graduate of Kabarak University who drew nationwide praise over her hard-hitting speech to Uasin Gishu county leaders, she issued the senator a condition he must meet.

In a previous statement, Ledama, who is a vocal supporter of Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, expressed admiration for Tarus' courage in boldly confronting the county leadership and revealed that he wanted to work with her.

This is after she had joined several other students from Uasin Gishu County who expressed their frustrations at the county leadership over the Finland Education programme, with Tarus giving the county leaders a difficult time in her address during their meeting.

"Mercy Tarus I would like you to work for me…speak your heart …the future belongs to candid youth! Let’s talk," he tweeted.

With many Kenyans believing that Tarus would accept working with the firebrand Senator, the graduate had other ideas.

In a rebuttal on Twitter (now called X), Tarus demanded that Ledama should look for his colleagues with the aim of holding the Uasin Gishu government to account.

She also demanded that the senators compel the county government to refund its residents the money they spent to facilitate studies abroad for their sons and daughters.

"Mr Ledama, before we can further this conversation, talk to your fellow Senators to bring the Uasin Gishu County Government to book and compel them to refund rightfully hard-earned money to the Citizens of Kenya.

"Maybe then, we can talk. Otherwise, I have nothing more to say," she retorted.

Tarus grew to a national celebrity in the space of a few days after she compelled the county government to account for the millions paid by the parents and students to the controversial Uasin Gishu overseas study programme dubbed Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund.

After her viral speech, she demanded the county leaders to refund their money, and implored President William Ruto to intervene in the matter so that the residents get justice before more consequences manifest.

In a significant development, Uasin Gishu Senator, Jackson Mandago revealed that he recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after presenting himself to the DCI headquarters in Kiambu Road following the Finland scholarship saga.

The DCI had officially commenced investigations into the saga which cost parents and students millions of shillings in the controversial programme.
