The term 'Gen Z', short for Generation Z, representing people born between 1996 and 2010, went viral on social media on Tuesday, August 8 after a student from Uasin Gishu County boldly confronted leaders during a meeting organised by Governor Jonathan Bii.

The meeting saw parents in the populous county come together to address the ongoing challenges faced by the county's program to airlift students for higher education, a case in point the Finland education airlift programme.

The county's program, aimed at providing deserving students with the opportunity to pursue their higher education dreams, has been met with sharp uproar across the country and even drawn the attention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The scandal came to light in early 2023 when parents of students who had been awarded scholarships to study in Finland complained that their children risked being deported after accruing tuition fees. Some students were forced to return to Kenya after the situation worsened.

Parents accused the county government of shortchanging and duping them into paying large sums of money to unscrupulous agents.

The meeting called by Governor Bii was intended to address the concerns and provide clarity on the way forward.

In the viral video seen by Viral Tea, the female student began by attacking the county boss for arriving late to the meeting despite instructing students and their parents to arrive by 9:00 am.

"First of all you have called us for a meeting with our parents, you said the meeting will be at 9 am, what time did you come?

"Probably you don’t expect me to ask such as question but these people elected you to serve them,” she began by dressing down the county boss.

The words were directed to Uasin Gishu leaders who had turned up for a meeting with the students and their parents. The leaders include Governor Bii, his Deputy John Barorot and Senator Jackson Mandago.

The student, who graduated from Kabarak University in 2021, lamented her ordeal of hawking porridge after the failed Finland promise adding that many of those affected are now on antidepressants.

“Yesterday I was selling cups of uji. I am a graduate, and I was supposed to go to Canada, I am selling uji and that is kazi ni kazi and that is okay, your daughter probably is earning her euros in the UK right now,” she lamented.

"This government was for hustlers. We do not want to hear many stories. You people are very mean with the truth."

She went on to challenge the leaders to explain to them the meaning of antidepressants, giving an example of any antidepressant they knew of.

Antidepressants are a type of medicine used to treat clinical depression. They can also be used to treat a number of other conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and generalised anxiety disorder. post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

"Please Google medicine on antidepressants so that you know what it is. My grandfather has not eaten since morning. Some are sick, some are on medication, some have depression, some have diabetes," she said.

The student went on to expose how three of the governor's children whom she studied with ended up in universities abroad living good lives while students of his county were suffering.

“You have given your children a headstart. This government of President Ruto was for hustlers. I am selling cups of uji and I am a graduate. I was supposed to go to Canada. Your daughter is probably earning in euros in the UK,” she said accusing Deputy Governor Barorot of being economical with the truth.

“It is okay if you follow me today because I don’t have anything to live for. So if you send your goons it is okay. Mr Chelilim (Governor Bii) nilisoma na watoto wako watatu, nataka nikuulize swali moja, unajua dawa ya depression? Do you know any antidepressants? You don’t."

She said they never gave the officials a go-ahead to use their money which was meant for education.

During the meeting, emotions ran high as some of the parents narrated how they sold their property or used retirement benefits to pay for their children to study in Finland.

"I paid Ksh2.5 million for my two children to go to Finland but two years down the line we are all at home rendered poor and suffering from depression," one of the parents complained.

Some of the learners who missed out on the programme wept as they accused some county leaders of openly lying to them.

Both Mandago and Bii told the parents to give them a week so that they come up with a way forward on the refunds as more than 300 parents are demanding to be refunded more than Ksh300 million.

In July 2023, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii distanced himself from the scandal and apportioned blame on the past administration, though he admitted that senior county officials allegedly colluded with rogue agents to fleece parents of millions of shillings in the fraudulent scholarship programme.

What Is Generation Z?

Gen Z, according to Mckinsey & Company, is currently the second-youngest generation, with millennials before and Generation Alpha after.

Like every generation, Gen Z’s behaviours are shaped by how they grew up. Young people today have come of age in the shadow of climate doom, pandemic lockdowns, and fears of economic collapse.

The first Gen Zers were born when the internet had just achieved widespread use, thus they are called “digital natives", the first generation to grow up with the internet as a part of daily life. The generation spans a wide range: the oldest Gen Zers have jobs and mortgages, while the youngest are still preteens.
