Esther Waitherero, the last surviving sibling of the late former President, Mwai Kibaki, is dead.

Her son, Francis Githinji, said that Waitherero passed on at the age of 115 at her home in Gatuyaini, Nyeri County on Thursday, July 14.

Githinji asked Kenyans to keep the family in their prayers during this difficult time.

Waitherero was the only sister in a family of five consisting of Kibaki, Bernard Nderitu, Philip Muriithi and Samuel Githinji who are all deceased.

She recalled during an interview with The Standard how she was tasked with taking care of Kibaki and Nderitu while young. She was 10 years older than the former Head of State.

"I still remember the day he was born (November 15, 1931). It was early in the morning before the sun rose. Our mother had woken up early to milk the cows but she could not finish. She went into labour and the boy was born.

"Our mother would go to the shamba and leave me to take care of the two boys. One was slightly older than the other and they were troublesome," she narrated.

"My work was to roast mitahato (bananas) and feed them. I would chew the bananas until they were soft then feed them."

Her death comes three months after the death of Kibaki was announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday, April 22. He died at the age of 90.

"But to this, I must add one more thing; Hon. Kibaki was, by all means, a modest man and did not believe in loud shouting. When the limelight was shone on him, he tended to be coy and hide.

"And this is because he found virtue and joy by doing the ordinary things that fulfilled his purpose," President Kenyatta eulogised while addressing mourners during the memorial service of  the former president at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, April 29.
