National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, has assured Members of the 13th Parliament that their car allowances, mileage reimbursements and mortgages will be exclusive to them.

Speaking on Monday, September 19 during the start of a week-long induction at the Safari Park Hotel, Wetangula revealed that he met with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on behalf of the MPs.

The Speaker noted that promised to give them a comprehensive pronouncement at the end of the retreat as the commission's chair Lynn Mengich was also invited to address them.

"I had a meeting with SRC and we have called them to order about a few things. At the close of this convention, I will be able to make a few pronouncements on your privileges and your other desired facilitation for you to do your work.

"Nobody, in their right frame of mind will interfere with MPs' car allowances, mileage reimbursement, mortgage and everything else you have been having because that is your entitlement," Wetang'ula affirmed.

On the subject of mortgages, Wetangula urged the MPs to take them immediately as it is among the privileges they are entitled to.

He further called upon the MPs to take the house loan in advance so that it serves them before the end of their term.

"There is a mortgage scheme, do not wait and take it in the third year because it will be very difficult to service. Take it now, it is the cheapest in the market, with an interest rate of between two to three per cent.

"Buy yourself an abode where you can be able to operate from," he added.

He also called upon them to take advantage of the favourable policies they were entitled to, noting that this will help them attend House sittings without fail.

SRC had on Thursday, July 28 abolished car grants and allowances for the MPs and MCAs elected during the August 9 general elections. Additionally, sitting and mileage allowances were done away with, a decision that came as a hammer blow to those elected into the National Assembly.

MPs will earn Ksh710,000, just like Senators. The MPs will have a motor vehicle reimbursement of Ksh7.5 million to facilitate the purchase of a car with not more than 3000cc engine capacity.

MPs will be paid Ksh356,525 per month car maintenance allowance as well as a reimbursement of a claimable mileage of one return journey per week at the rate of Ksh116.63 per kilometre, which will depend on the vehicle's engine capacity of not more than 3000cc.

MCAs will bag Ksh144,375 and have similar packages to the deputy speaker, who will earn Ksh216,563, a car loan of Ksh2 million and a mortgage of Ksh3 million.

The Speaker of the County Assembly will earn Ksh525,525 as well as a car loan worth Ksh4 million and a mortgage of up to Ksh20 million.
