The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced the suspension of two matatu saccos, namely Bungoma Line Safaris and Smart Highways Sacco.

In a statement issued by the Director General, George Njao on Friday, March 29, NTSA explained that the saccos were suspended over non-compliance.

In particular, the saccos failed to comply with various directives regarding speed regulations on the road.

"The Authority notifies the public that it has suspended the Operator Licenses for Bungoma Line Safari Ltd and Smart Highways Sacco Ltd.

"The suspensions were necessitated by the saccos failure to comply with provisions of Section 5 of the NTSA (Operation of PSV) Regulations, 2014 and analysis of speed data violations that were compiled through the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS)," read the statement in part.

However, the two saccos were given a chance to have their licences restored on condition that they submit their vehicles for inspection.

"In its decision, the Authority expects the saccos to comply with all the requirements of the Traffic Act, the PSV Regulations and present their vehicles for compliance inspection to establish their roadworthiness and to confirm the functionality of the installed speed limiters," the DG added.

Bungoma Line was directed to present 162 of their vehicles for compliance inspection, the same number of vehicles will be required to undergo compliance checks by the speed limiter vendor.

Furthermore, all of the Bungoma Line drivers will be required to undergo road safety sensitization and 14 of its drivers will be retested by NTSA before the licences are restored.

Smart Highways Sacco was directed to submit 29 of its vehicles for inspection at NTSA, 27 of which will undergo compliance checks on the speed limit.

All drivers of the sacco will undergo road safety sensitization and two of its drivers will be retested by NTSA.
