Nation Media Group (NMG) correspondent Mwangi Muiruri was on Friday morning, March 15 attacked by three armed men who robbed him of his mobile phone and Ksh2,000 in cash.

The media house reported that Muiruri was accosted at gunpoint by three men who were dressed in navy blue suits.

Furthermore, they intercepted him in a white Mazda Demio car with concealed number plates at the Nairobi-Nyeri-Embu road intersection, commonly known as Makutano, at about 5.30 am.

The trio demanded the security PIN to access Muiruri’s phone and also forcefully took away Ksh2,000 that was in his shirt pocket.

The attack was reported at the Makutano Police Station Occurrence Book (OB) incident number 5 of March 15, 2024. His left eye was bruised in the altercation.

While it is not yet immediately clear on the motive of the attack, Muiruri recently made headlines following his altercation with Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria, after the latter claimed foul play regarding his article on the appointment of former Citizen TV journalist, Jacque Maribe, to his Ministry.

In a post, Kuria first of all denied ever granting NMG an interview where he confirmed that he appointed Maribe to the docket, a month after she was acquitted in the murder case of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

While refuting the claims, Kuria urged the regional media house's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to produce evidence justifying quotes that he had indeed held such an engagement, even though he noted that he would stand with the former news anchor.

"Contrary to reports by the Nation, I have never been interviewed by the media House nor made any comment nor announcement about Jacque Maribe. I have challenged CEO Stephen Gitagama to provide evidence from one Mwangi Muiruri who wrote the article," Read CS Moses Kuria's post.

Seemingly believing that NMG would ignore his demands, the CS threatened to escalate the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday morning, March 15, going to the extent of dragging the reporter into the mix.

He alerted the CEO, one of the top media owners in Kenya, that a screenshot which depicted his response to reports of hiring Maribe, was forged. That screenshot had claimed that it was the Public Service Commission (PSC) who appointed her, not him.

However, NMG remained adamant that it was the CS who confirmed to the reporter that Maribe was recruited as the Head of Communications in the Ministry of Public Service.

“It is true (that Maribe had been recruited as the ministry’s communications director) but it is not me who has appointed her. It is the Public Service Commission,” read part of the text message that CS Kuria sent to Muiruri

The reporter also reached out to Maribe, who confirmed her recruitment to the public service ministry.

“Yes, I confirm, it is the truth that always sets all of us free that has worked and I thank God for everything. Let us wait and see the hand of God revealing itself in my new designation,” she replied.

Nation revealed that on Thursday evening, March 14, a programmes officer in CS Kuria’s office, called Muiruri asking to be sent the text message that had been sent to him by his boss, claiming that the story had caused issues in the docket. However, that request was turned down.
