Police Shoot Dead Suspect Armed With Jembe After Trying To Arrest Him

A senior sergeant police officer is fighting for his life at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after a suspect he had gone to arrest assaulted him with a jembe in Gesima, Borabu constituency, Nyamira County before he was shot dead by the sergeant's colleagues.

Keroka Deputy OCPD Hassan Bashir stated on Saturday, February 11 that the officer was with his colleagues and had gone to arrest the suspect who was on the run after he committed an alleged crime of grievous harm two weeks ago.

Bashir said the officers had gone to arrest the 27-year-old, Anthony Rakamba following a crime he had committed and upon arrival at his home, they asked him to open the door as they identified themselves as police officers.

He opened the door while holding the jembe in his hand and hit the officer, inflicting a deep cut into his head.

Rakamba was on the run after committing the crime and had resurfaced when the police received intelligence and had gone to arrest him.

"The other police officers responded immediately with defence and shot the suspect three times," stated the Deputy OCPD.

The senior sergeant was rushed to Gucha hospital and later referred to Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital where he was admitted while the suspect was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.

In a near-similar incident, a 28-year-old man hacked his 50-year-old father to death using a jembe at the Kegochi sub-location in Nyamache Sub-county, Kisii County.

Reports indicated that the deceased, James Ogega, went to knock on the son's house to request his jembe. However, a commotion ensued between the two in the process the deceased was cut severally on the head by his son using the farming tool and succumbed to the injuries.

Enock Mauti, chief of the Kegochi Sub location, alerted police officers who rushed to the scene.

Confirming the incident Nyamache OCPD Kipkulei  Kipkemboi said that, they visited the scene and established that the deceased woke up at 5:00 am and went to knock on the son's house to request for his jembe prior to the commotion.

Kipkemboi said that they have arrested the 28-year-old and has been detained at the station as they conduct investigations over the matter, adding that he will be arraigned in court to face the charges upon conclusion of the investigations.

The body of the deceased was transferred to Nyamache sub-county hospital awaiting autopsy.
