Police officers clashed with supporters of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga on Thursday, May 25 as they flooded the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters off Kiambu Road in a show of solidarity for Njenga.

Njenga had presented himself at the DCI headquarters after he surrendered himself at the Nakuru Law Courts, hours after the DCI labelled him as a wanted man.

He was still holed up in the highly-protected premises by the time police were forced to fire teargas to disperse his supporters who were chanting loud slogans outside the DCI HQ.

Accompanying him were Azimio la Umoja leaders Martha Karua, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and George Wajackoyah.

Also present were Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament (MP) Jeremiah Kioni.

Several photos and videos showed a crowd of supporters surrounding the leaders and greeting the former Mungiki leader as well as his entourage when they arrived.

Njenga’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, accompanied his client to the headquarters where they had to walk through the entrance as their cars were barred from entering the premises.

Minutes after their entry, a staunch supporter of the Azimio coalition, Calvince Okoth, alias Gaucho, tried to enter the DCI but was barred from entry.

Reports had indicated that Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, was to also show up at DCI HQ, with his last trip being March 7, 2023, where he was locked out from the premises in dramatic fashion when former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i was being grilled.

In a press conference at SMK Centre in Nairobi on Wednesday, March 24 DAP-K party leader, Eugene Wamalwa claimed that Njenga was arrested in relation to his support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga, to the point of attending the late Mukami's funeral in Njabini, Nyandarua County which was graced by top government officials, among them, President William Ruto.

"Maina Njenga just because he came out to support Raila Odinga, he went all the way to Njambini. They have arrested him and he is currently in Nakuru trying to get back his freedom,” said Wamalwa.

Njenga appeared at the Nakuru Law Courts on the same day and was directed to appear at DCI the following day after he was set free in line with the anticipatory bail of Ksh100,000 he had posted on May 18, 2023.

The DCI had stated that Njenga was being sought after in relation to the recovery of two firearms and over 90 rolls of bhang, found at a home linked to him.

In the raid conducted at Ngomongo village in Dundori ward, the officers who arrested 8 suspects aged between 37 and 54 also found three rounds of 9mm blank ammunition hidden in one of the rooms.

The investigative agency's statement came after reported raids by police on three homes belonging to Njenga on May 12 for reasons they did not explain.

The raid that occurred reportedly in the early hours targeted his homes in Wanyororo, Nakuru County, and Nyahururu and Ngarua in Laikipia County.
