Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga paid a surprise visit to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Tuesday, March 7 where former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i was being interrogated.

A clip obtained by Viral Tea showed the Azimio la Umoja leader arriving at DCI headquarters in a fleet of black SUVs and a contingent of bodyguards, as well as supporters allied to Matiang'i who were still camped outside the gate.

However, security at the investigative agency's headquarters along Kiambu Road held him back momentarily, blocking his entry, a matter which infuriated Raila.

He moved to confront the security detail manning the entrance as he threatened to mobilise a forced entry into the premises.

"This is a public office, you want me to instruct these people to open this gate? How can I be prevented to access, I have a right to go inside," Odinga charged at the officer.

Odinga was accompanied by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Kitui Senator Dan Maanzo- among other leaders allied to the Azimio la Umoja Coalition. The pro-Matiang'i supporters were meanwhile growing impatient while joining in the confrontation, threatening to forcefully open the gates.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader then left after a short while.

Matiang'i meanwhile is still at the DCI headquarters after he presented himself in the morning, with security agencies blocking him from accessing the DCI headquarters.

A standoff had ensued when he got to the entrance of the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road after he arrived alongside a team of lawyers who were determined to accompany him to the grilling.

The DCI officers moved to block Matiang'i from entering the headquarters with his lawyers, a matter that triggered a commotion. The officers would later reveal that not all lawyers will be allowed to enter the headquarters.

Matiang'i's entourage also caused a huge traffic snarl jam along Kiambu road as vehicles could be seen staggering and unable to move quicker than usual.

The lawyers stood their ground and insisted that while the crowd that had accompanied them won't be allowed in, it was important that all lawyers be allowed in, triggering the standoff as police officers moved to mitigate the situation.

Another standoff ensued, this time inside the DCI headquarters after he refused to record a statement regarding the alleged night raid of his Karen residence on Wednesday, February 8, which has since been disowned by all of the country's security agencies.

While appearing before the detectives, the Former CS is said to have kept mum and refused to record anything over the police raid.

He is said to have told detectives that he has a constitutional right to remain silent. The move forced the DCI detectives to leave the grilling room to consult on the next course of action.
