According to the notice, the initiative will kick off on March 7 at 11 a.m., with schoolchildren in Nyatike Constituency receiving free milk. The Kenya Dairy Board will supply and package the milk in tamper-proof containers to prevent any unauthorized resale or contamination.
Several high-profile guests are expected at the launch, including Agriculture Principal Secretaries Julius Mueke and Joseph Motari, as well as Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko and other county officials.
"The First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, in conjunction with the Kenya Dairy Board and the State Department for Livestock Development, will launch a pilot School Milk program in Migori County," the notice read in part.
The Migori County Government confirmed that the event will be hosted at Isebania Mixed Primary School and Bondo Kosiemo Primary School under the Feed One, End Hunger initiative.
Rachel Ruto joins a growing number of leaders championing free milk programs for school children, particularly those in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).
Other leaders who have implemented similar initiatives include Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who recently introduced free milk programmes for ECDE centres in their respective counties.
“I'm urging teachers to help protect this programme for us to achieve the intended objectives. Let teachers ensure that no learner takes milk out of the school compound. This milk is meant for the learners, and it should only be taken at school,” Natembeya advised.
