National Assembly Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung'wah on Friday, July 14 claimed that the planned Azimio la Umoja anti-government demonstrations were a dress rehearsal to recreate the August 1, 1982 coup to overthrow President William Ruto's government.

Speaking during a roadside rally in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County in the company of President Ruto, the Kikuyu lawmaker alleged that the protests had sinister motives aimed at taking power for themselves.

Affirming that it was Kenyans who elected President Ruto to power and that the government belongs to them, Ichung'wah assured that the Kenya Kwanza government will protect the interests of all Kenyans from Azimio seeking to delegitimize Ruto's government.

"They have planned that for two weeks, they are saying that on August 1, 1982, they tried to overthrow the Nyayo government. In these next two weeks, they are doing a dress rehearsal led by Uhuru and Raila with the aim of overthrowing the people's government.

"I want to tell them today, this is not William Ruto's government, this is our government and we will protect it," he asserted.

Ichung'wah questioned the aim of the anti-government protests and whether or not they would be considered a success if property was destroyed and lives were lost as a result.

"Mr President I agree with you. I heard you asking how many people should be killed so that they know the protests were successful. How much property should they destroy so that they say the protests succeeded?

"They don't care about the protests, neither do they care about the lives of Kenyans. They are looking for ulterior motives to overthrow the government," he went on.

Turning his attention to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ichung'wah accused the former Head of State of allowing Azimio to plan on toppling the government of his former junior, terming his actions as doublespeak as he revealed that not once did Ruto plan against the Jubilee government.

"For 10 years, we gave you an opportunity to lead our country. Even when you disrespected William Ruto, he never planned on any given day to overthrow your government.

"Let him fix the country and the economy that you and your family destroyed," said a strong-talking Ichung'wah.

Speaking earlier during the launch of development projects in Nakuru County, Ichung'wah demanded that the government strips Uhuru and Raila of their government cars, lamenting that the duo was using government resources for anti-government demonstrations.

He lamented that the government was going at losses given the damages to the vehicles, further claiming that Uhuru took most of the vehicles at State House after leaving office proposing for the same to be confiscated.

Raila's vehicles have been allegedly damaged in recent protests by the police. Uhuru, on the other hand, is yet to attend the protest.

Despite Ruto steering clear of the matter in Nakuru, Ruto in Mai Mahiu reiterated his accusations at Uhuru for funding the anti-government protests and hiring goons to cause chaos.

"I want to tell Uhuru to leave alone this old man, stop giving him money to hire Mungiki goons to burn Nairobi.

"You have been a president, be respectful. We supported you when you were our president. Leave Mr Kitendawili alone and if you don't, we will deal with you alongside him," Ruto warned.
