President William Ruto has hit back at opposition leaders who attended the launch of Martha Karua's People’s Liberation Party (PLP), accusing them of using the platform to attack his administration instead of articulating their political agenda.

Speaking in Taita Taveta County on Friday, February 28, Ruto criticized the opposition for what he termed as misplaced priorities, arguing that their speeches were dominated by personal attacks against him rather than discussions on national issues.

The president specifically called out Karua, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, questioning the intent behind their remarks.

He expressed disappointment that the leaders had allegedly focused on criticizing his leadership rather than outlining their vision for the country.

“I saw some people gathering, claiming they are forming a party, yet they spent four hours talking about William Ruto. Is their party named after me? Is their agenda solely about me?” Ruto remarked.

Dismissing the opposition figures as lacking a substantive plan for Kenyans, Ruto accused them of being deceptive and urged them to offer real solutions rather than engaging in personal attacks.

“I want to tell Kenyans that those speaking about William Ruto are not doing so on my behalf. They are con artists. Let them find a party name and formulate an agenda because if their only focus is attacking me, they will fail,” he asserted.

The president also warned opposition leaders against using tribal rhetoric, urging them to present credible policy alternatives instead.

“The market for tribalism is gone. Stop trying to sell it. Bring a real plan for the people. What is your alternative? Or is your only strategy organizing protests? Since when is protesting a job?” he questioned.

Ruto’s remarks were a direct response to Gachagua’s criticism during the PLP launch on Thursday, February 27. Gachagua had accused the president of misleading Kenyans, claiming Ruto had manipulated various groups, including religious leaders, into supporting his 2022 presidential bid.

He further alleged that in just two years, Ruto's administration had weakened key sectors such as education and healthcare while making life more difficult for ordinary Kenyans.

With political tensions rising, the verbal exchanges between Ruto and the opposition signal an increasingly heated battle ahead of the next election cycle as both sides seek to solidify their support base.

“Ever since I was born, I have never seen a liar like Ruto. This guy looks you straight in the eye and lies without hesitation. Many people from home have blamed me, saying I'm the one who brought him to them,” Gachagua stated.
