Motorists in Tanzania are from today enjoying lower fuel prices after its government, through the Ministry of Energy, announced a further drop in fuel prices barely two months after being reduced in November 2023.

Effective January 3, 2024, at 12:01 am, Tanzanians began paying cheaper prices for oil from the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara.

The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) attributed the decrease in prices of petroleum products in January 2024 to the fall in the world oil prices (FOB) by an average of 6.03 per cent for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 7.13 per cent for Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

“The decrease in prices of petroleum products in January 2024 is mainly due to the fall in the world oil prices (FOB) by an average of 6.03% for PMS and 7.13% for AGO and a decline in premiums for the importation of petroleum products for Dar es Salaam Port by an average of 3.72% for PMS and 17.52% for AGO and for Mtwara port, by an average of 22.71% for PMS and 22.12% for AGO,” explained EWURA in their press release.

Retail prices of petrol and diesel imported through the Dar es Salaam port will see a drop of Tsh74 (Ksh4.62) and Tsh148 (Ksh9.24) per litre, respectively.

According to EWURA the retail price of kerosene imported through the same port is expected to increase by Tsh57 (Ksh3.56) per litre compared to the prices published on December 6, 2023.

As per the new schedule in Dar, petrol will now retail at Tsh 3,084 (Ksh193.52) a litre while diesel will retail for Tsh 3,078 (Ksh193.14) and Kerosene at Tsh 3,510 (Ksh219.19).

In Tanga, the prices are Tsh 3,064 (Ksh192.26) for petrol, Tsh 3,219 (Ksh201.02) for diesel and 3,556 (Ksh223.14) for kerosene.

In Mtwara, the fuel will retail at Tsh 3,201 (Ksh200.86), Tsh 3,456 (Ksh216.86) and Tsh 3,582 (Ksh224.77) petrol, diesel and kerosene respectively.

EWURA however cautioned retailers and wholesalers to strictly adhere to the displayed prices, emphasizing that legal action will be taken against those failing to comply with its instructions.

When fuel prices dropped in Tanzania in November, Kenyan motorists living in Namanga and along the Kenya-Tanzania border were noted to be travelling to Tanzanian border towns to purchase fuel after the Kenya Kwanza government increased and introduced new taxes on fuel, shooting the cost per litre to historic highs.

Currently, Kenyan motorists have to contend with the current fuel prices until January 14, 2024, when the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is expected to announce its monthly fuel price review.

Right now, Kenyans are paying Ksh212.36, Ksh201.47 & Ksh199.05 for a litre of either Super Petrol, Diesel or Kerosene respectively.

In the last monthly review, the price of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene decreased by Ksh5, Ksh2 and Ksh4.01 per litre respectively, the biggest decrease margin in more than two years.

It came amidst huge pressure by Kenyans on President William Ruto's administration to lower the cost of fuel which would in turn lower the cost of living amidst job cuts and freezes pushing scores of Kenyans into an economic black hole.
