The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) disciplinary committee has expelled nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the party. The move has even harsher consequences as this means she will lose her seat in Parliament.

In a statement released Monday, May 19, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) approved the decision after a disciplinary hearing.

According to Omar, Orwoba is now barred from representing or speaking on behalf of the party in any capacity.

He added that the party has selected Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi from Kimilili Constituency, Bungoma County, to take Orwoba’s place. A formal request has already been submitted to the Senate to begin the process of her removal.

"Pursuant to Article 29 of the UDA Party Constitution, and having exhaustively deliberated on the matters before it, the Party's Disciplinary Committee has resolved that Sen. Gloria Orwoba be expelled from the membership of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party with immediate effect," he stated.

"Further, during its meeting held on 19th May 2025, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party adopted and ratified the Disciplinary Committee's decision. Accordingly, Sen. Gloria Orwoba ceases to be a member of the UDA Party."

Additionally, the party stated that it has notified the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of her expulsion.

Some members of the UDA leadership were unhappy with Senator Gloria Orwoba's decision to attend the homecoming event of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i earlier this month, sparking concerns about her allegiance to the party.

In addition to that appearance, UDA’s disciplinary committee chair, Charles Njenga, highlighted other actions, like welcoming Matiang’i back into the country and publicly criticising government programs during an interview, as further justification for disciplinary measures against her.

In today’s statement, the Secretary General acknowledged the party respects freedom of expression but argued that Orwoba’s actions—essentially aligning herself with rival political camps—violated UDA’s rules and principles.

"While the UDA Party upholds the values of freedom of expression and association as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, fidelity and loyalty to Party ideals are fundamental to its constitution and to further consolidate our multiparty politics by strengthening political parties. Hon. Gloria Orwoba cannot, therefore, continue to play for two political teams simultaneously," added the statement.

Orwoba's woes at the Senate are known. She was suspended from the House in September 2023 for the remainder of the second session of the 13th Parliament.

On September 20, the House adopted the Powers and Privileges Committee report tabled on August 10, which recommended her suspension for failing to appear before it to substantiate claims she made against her colleagues regarding corruption and sexual harassment. She, however, obtained a court order halting the Senate’s resolution, preventing her from serving any part of the suspension.

In September 2023, the Committee on Powers and Privileges recommended her suspension following allegations that a Senate clerk had assaulted her. However, she challenged the decision in court and secured an order blocking its enforcement.
