Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairman, Gideon Moi, has suspended the party's Secretary General and Former Bomet East Member of Parliament (MP) Nick Salat.

In a statement seen by Viral Tea dated Wednesday, December 15, Moi resolved to kick out the lawmaker after the National Executive Committee (NEC) was notified of complaints regarding his conduct during a meeting held on the same day.

"This is to notify you that in the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting on 15th December, several complaints on your conduct and violation of the party constitution were placed before the members for discussion. While noting that complaints on their face appeared serious, the jurisdiction to deal with matters constituting disciplinary measures lies with the Disciplinary Committee created under article 34 of the Constitution.

"In the exercise of its mandate under article 15 of the Constitution, the committee resolved as follows," the statement read in part.

Moi referred Salat's issue to the Disciplinary Committee as provided under Article 7.2 (a) (iii) of the Constitution.

"You be and are hereby suspended forthwith from carrying out and/or performing your duties as the Party's Secretary General pending the determination of the disciplinary proceedings," added the statement.

Moi added that the disciplinary proceedings are expedited and determined within 30 days from the date hereof.

Salat has been at loggerheads with Gideon Moi especially since the party boss submitted to Parliament an application for the East African Legislative Assembly, a move the Salat alleged was selfish. He had also forwarded his name for consideration for nomination for EALA on the Kanu ticket, triggering a political standoff with Moi who later pulled out.

Salat had accused Moi of micromanaging and running down the party. On Sunday, December 11, Moi announced that the party was planning a radical clean-up in the secretariat noting that there is a need for fresh blood in the party's leadership.

“We want fresh ideas and people who know where we want to be in 2027. We shall have our elections soon.

"Next year will not be business as usual. To anyone who wants a particular position, you are free to throw your hat in the ring,” said Moi.

In the August general election, Salat suffered a loss in his bid for the Bomet East Parliamentary seat after he was trounced by Richard Yegon of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. Yegon garnered 35,431 votes to clinch the seat with Salat coming in second with 13,425 votes.

Salat was also notably named among the top Azimio la Umoja officials who had facilitated the accommodation of the IEBC Cherera four commissioners at an apartment in Kilimani over the five days that followed the presser at Serena Hotel on the same day IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati was to announce the results.
