What should have been a normal and casual Saturday, March 25 turned chaotic along Thika Road as traffic was disrupted by a massive looting of maize and beans from a truck that overturned.

Various reports had indicated that the truck had overturned along the busy highway around the Ndarugo - next to Juja, minutes after 10 am.

A video seen by Viral Tea showed traffic building up along the road but on zooming in, there was a commotion as motorists using the road were captured carting away the maize and beans in guinea bags.

Despite the presence of police officers, the motorists carried the farm produce back to their vehicles with the intention of driving off, seemingly delighted by their stroke of luck from the truck that overturned and blocked the lane of vehicles heading to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

They were not alone. Other passers-by summoned boda boda riders to help ferry the loot even as the police arrived to restore traffic flow.

Despite the confusion witnessed along the highway, police focused on restoring the traffic to order.

Kenyans plying the route also called on the police to add more officers on the ground to deal with the looters who were worsening the situation.

"Traffic along Thika superhighway is being caused by Kenyans looting beans from the lorry involved in a bad accident," one of the motorists lamented.

"Everywhere is clogged up including the service lanes. Road trip blues," Andre Byama added.

Other motorists sought to use alternative routes as preliminary reports indicated that the lorry had lost control and hit the side rail before later overturning.

The looting comes at a time when Kenyans have been decrying the high cost of living characterised by the high cost of basic goods, a matter which forms the basis of mass protests by the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Trucks that ply the busy highway ferry goods considered highly valuable to members of the public and when they are caught up in accidents, they are vulnerable to looting.

On August 23, 2021, police officers had a hard time restraining locals from looting a beer truck that overturned along Thika Road, with the residents storming the scene of the beer truck and escaping with full bottles in a scenario of Christmas coming early for them.

The free-for-all situation of locals tussling for the loot led to massive traffic along both sides of the carriageway as the cars moved at a slow pace, with drivers rolling their windows down to catch the locals in action.
