Eldoret Town in Uasin Gishu County was brought to a standstill after chaos erupted between police officers and hawkers in the Central Business District (CBD).

One of the supermarkets on Thursday, November 17 was seen in videos shared online looted heavily by some of the hawkers.

They were joined by street children who broke into the shopping facility and stole everything including a generator, chairs among other valuables.

Here is the video:

Cars parked outside the supermarket were also destroyed as the rioters smashed the windows and fled with some items.

The police were at some point forced to teargas the rioters in a bid to contain the marauding looting spree.

The running battles also forced traders to close down their businesses out of fear of losing their property to the rioters.

Speaking to Viral Tea, a correspondent privy to the matter revealed that the riots began when police were attempting to forcefully kick the hawkers out of the CBD.

"Police were trying to teargass them out of town and they resisted...one thing led to another," the correspondent noted.

Reports indicated that the county government was trying to throw them out of undesignated business points only to meet resistance and after two attempts, they evicted them by force.

"Collaboration of hawkers and street boys currently looting from shops along Moi street Eldoret. They didnt want to leave town willingly," he added.

The clash, whose photos and videos went viral, sparked an uproar with Kenyans joining residents in urging the police to call reinforcements to deal with the hawkers and other rogue traders.

Others called for those who looted property enmasse to be arrested.

The county government and the police by the time of publishing was yet to issue an official statement.
