Two police officers were among four aggravated robbery suspects arrested on the night of Wednesday, August 2 after returning to the scene of a previous robbery only to walk into a trap set up by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

A police report filed at Juja Police Station, under OB number 37/31/07/2023 indicated that the two officers, both attached to the DCI in Kamukunji, were apprehended alongside the two suspects after they kidnapped a student from Machakos University (name withheld) on Monday, July 31, 2023

The student was revealed to be driving a rented car along Kenyatta Road in Juja, Kiambu County from Embu where he had attended a ceremony heading to Machakos.

The officers who were on board a white car then blocked the student's vehicle along the road and executed the abduction.

"Three men armed with a pistol handcuffed him and forced him to take them to his friend's house which he did. They also handcuffed him and took them to Total Petrol Station in Marurui where they forced them to fuel their vehicle," the police report seen by Viral Tea read in part.

The officers had first transferred Ksh85,000 from the student's phone as well as another Ksh614,040 (USD 4,300) from an online Binance account of the two victims.

"Today 2/8/2023 following a tip-off that the said people were again going to (the friend's) house, DCI officers laid a trap and arrested four persons among them two police officers," added the report.

During the arrest, one of the officers was found armed with a Jericho pistol and a pocket phone radio. Also detained were two motor vehicles, one white and the other red in colour.

The suspects are currently being held at Juja Police Station pending legal action.

On February 7, 2023, three police officers attached to the National Police Service (NPS)-K9 unit headquarters within Lang'ata Sub-county, Nairobi were arrested after they abducted two university students and demanded a Ksh100,000 bribe each.

The trio had accosted the students from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and from Daystar University while they were at Magharib building near T-Mall along Lang'ata Road where they were having lunch.

The officers in civilian clothing surrounded them at the entrance and upon introducing themselves, they informed the students that they were being arrested in possession of bhang.

"One of them was placed in a motor vehicle Toyota Vitz white in colour. The other one was placed in a waiting car Toyota Premio silver in colour which had three occupants one dressed in full jungle uniforms and the other two in civilian clothes.

"The two were held in the said vehicles for more than four hours. They were forced to call their parents and send cash Ksh100,000 each in order to secure their release or be taken into custody," read a police report in part.

One of the students was driven to a mobile money shop and ordered to withdraw Ksh10,000 he had received from his father in addition to Ksh10,000 he already had before he was released.

The other called his mother who worked at the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) who rushed to T-Mall and met her son being bundled into the white Vitz while being asked to raise Ksh100,000 to secure her son's release.

"She was also forced to enter the car in order for them to negotiate, but she refused. She told them to wait for her as she withdrew the cash at T-Mall.

"At T-Mall, she met police officers from Nyayo police post who were on patrol and reported the incident. The officers rushed to where the two motor vehicles were parked and managed to arrest two suspects who were in the motor vehicle," the report added, noting that the student was rescued.
