Cabinet Secretary of Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action Aisha Jumwa had a howler that sent President William Ruto reeling in laughter during a live address on Friday, November 18.

Speaking in Kwale county on Friday, November 18, Jumwa took her time to appreciate the Head of State before she accidentally confused her words by calling Ruto the Deputy President.

She recollected herself and explained that she has been so used to referring to Ruto as the country's second-in-command.

"Mimi nataka kuchukua nafasi hii kwanza kabisa nimshukuru naibu wa (I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Deputy)..." Jumwa stated before she paused, leaving attendees at the event in fits of laughter, including Ruto.

"Samahani, kuniradi. Tumeishi naye kama naibu wa rais sana (I'm sorry, forgive me. We have been used to refer to him as the Deputy President for a long time)," the CS later clarified before she continued with her speech and recognized Ruto as the Head of State.

Jumwa spoke during President Ruto's function to inaugurate the DEVKI Steel Plant in Kwale County. Its billionaire, Narendra Naval, gifted President Ruto a mini wheelbarrow as a token of appreciation for his hustler initiative.

"There is a big gift that I will give you, you will love it. I am sure you will keep it on your table. I am very happy to say that people who couldn't speak, have a chance to talk because of you.

"You have given them the chance to recognise them as hustlers. It is the biggest achievement Kenya has made," he praised.

The billionaire narrated that he was one of the people victimised for being associated with Ruto, adding that he feared speaking on the phone like ordinary Kenyans no matter their political affiliations because of snooping on private conversations by the government.

"Six months ago it was not easy. Once you were identified to be a Ruto person you would not sleep. All state machinery would come after you. That happened to me, sir.

"We could not sleep, they would frame you and send state officials to you. They took our telephones, and computers and closed the businesses. Till today, they look at our WhatsApp messages. I am sure we will not be working like this," he said.

In response, President Ruto vowed that his government would not snoop on private conversations and threaten Kenyans.

"You don't need to use WhatsApp anymore. I think when you said you use your ordinary phone, one citizen said he would try to call him...(laugh) to check if his phone is working. I want to promise Kenyans that the government will not sell fear to them, and we will not issue threats and disrespect citizens.

"This is a democratic government for everyone in the country and were going to respect everybody, every citizen, whatever their situation," he concluded.
