Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disrupted a carefully-crafted escape plan by a three-man gang and recovered mobile phones suspected to have been stolen by them in an ongoing crackdown on criminals countrywide.

In a statement on Wednesday, November 16, the thug who was part of a three-man gang attacking members of the public along Cascade Premier prison road, was shot in the neck as he attempted to fend off the response by the DCI officers.

The response startled the rest of the thugs who were armed with a homemade gun and a machete running away from the officers who chased them down.

"His efforts came to nought when one of the officers opened fire in self-defence, sending the thug sprawling on the ground metres away.

"The deafening response sent the remaining machete-wielding duo who were also armed with a homemade firearm fleeing, prompting a chase that lasted a few minutes as the determined officers gave chase closely behind," stated the DCI in part.

Following a chase involving the thugs who were aboard a numberless motorbike, one of them was seized and arrested while the other disappeared in a stormwater culvert.

"One of the robbers was finally cornered and arrested while his accomplice disappeared in a stormwater culvert, briefly disrupting an incoherent chorus of croaking toads whose abode had just been rudely invaded.

"The thug outwitted our officers who gave him another chance to mend his ways and preach the good gospel, lest the fate that befell his departed partner in crime befalls him," added the DCI.

Following the incident, the officers recovered two machetes, a homemade firearm and mobile phones suspected to have been snatched from innocent victims.

The numberless motorbike used by the thugs was also impounded by the officers who towed it to Thika police station as an exhibit in court.

As detectives work round the clock to rid the city of criminals and criminal gangs, members of the public have been urged to continue partnering with police for their safety and security.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki changed the police command in Nairobi and instructed security forces to hunt down those he accused of daring the government to go after them.

"We have witnessed increasing criminal activity within Nairobi. Those boys who have dared the government and want to tell us that they can take over the city and make it a city of crime, we have heard you and therefore we are coming effective immediately," he said.

"We have already started taking measures already to deal with the emerging crime trend in Nairobi. In this regard, the command of the Nairobi city police has changed effective immediately."
