Four people survived after a light aircraft crash landed at the Nairobi National Park on Wednesday, September 21, shortly after it took off from Wilson Airport.

The incident occurred in the noon hours, with the cause of the crash yet to be identified by the time of publishing.

Lang'ata OCPD Wanjiru Kimani, while confirming the incident, revealed that the aircraft's engine had failed shortly after it departed the busy airport.

"None of them has been injured, just slight bruises and they have been airlifted by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and taken to Wilson Airport for medical checkup,” she said.

The aircraft was a Cessna, registered as 5YBWE, the type of aircraft used in flight training sessions. It belonged to Flight Star Academy, a flying school. A video shared by NTV showed it lying upside down.

The incident was first reported by Gerald Njoroge who revealed that the incident caught onlookers stuck in traffic along the busy Southern Bypass unawares, metres away from the scene.

A response team consisting of firefighters, police and a chopper from the KWS was quickly deployed to the scene.

"Small plane crash landed at the Nairobi National Park few seconds after take off from Wilson Airport. Fire engines, police and KWS chopper on site, quick response.

"Bikers witnessed the accident could not help because of the electric park fence. Hope they are safe," he wrote.

A boda boda (motorbike) rider who witnessed the incident revealed that he saw the plane flying dangerously close to the ground, with a belief that it was just carrying out patrols around the park.

"I saw the plane flying at a very low altitude and at first, my passenger and I thought that it was conducting a patrol around the park. As it approached the plane made a sharp turn and overturned, crashing on the ground.

"Shortly after, three passengers onboard managed to get out of the plane and sat on top of it," he recounted.

It comes more than a month after a light aircraft ferrying a pilot and two tourists crash-landed at a farm in Ewaat village, Njoro, Nakuru County, on its way to the Maasai Mara Game reserve.

Confirming the accident, Nakuru County Police Commander Peter Mwanzo said that the accident occurred at 1.30 pm in the afternoon on Saturday, August 13.

The pilot of the plane identified as 27-year-old Joshua Kwam was ferrying passengers who were a 28-year-old female Peru national and a French man aged 29.

"An aircraft 5Y-C11 has crashed within the county at around 1330hours. On board were one pilot and two tourists.

"The plane crash-landed at Koibyot Village near Likia in Mauche. The two passengers and a pilot are all safe with no injuries," said Mwanzo to the media.
