A video clip has surfaced showing anti-riot police officers opening fire at a protester at close range during protests in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

In the clip obtained by Viral Tea, two police officers heavily armed in anti-riot combat gear can be seen approaching the protester and assaulting him before appearing to let him go.

However, seconds later, one of the officers could be seen pointing his gun and shooting the protester at close range. An individual could be heard saying, "Amempiga risasi kwa kichwa (he has shot him in the head)."

Here is the video:

In another clip, a woman who was selling facemasks could be seen wailing in despair next to a puddle of blood strewn on the street, surrounded by a crowd who claimed that the police officers had shot him dead.

Viral Tea understands that the protester has been rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for urgent medical attention.

It has been revealed that the protester was, in fact, selling facemasks during the protests where Kenyans took to the streets demanding justice for the late Albert Ojwang, a teacher cum X influencer. This has been evidenced by a photo obtained by Viral Tea showing him still clasping a packet of masks as he lay on the ground, bleeding from his upper body.

In another clip, the police officer was seen sprinting toward a group of protesters gathered along Mondlane Street near Imenti House, emerging from a larger group of officers stationed on Moi Avenue across from the Nairobi Sports Centre.

The officer, charging toward the crowd, discharged his firearm in their direction, though no injuries were reported at that point. Moments later, the officer returned, turning off Moi Avenue onto Mondlane Street alongside a fellow officer. There, they confronted the man selling face masks.

Rather than moving past him, the two officers stopped. One slapped the man, while the other struck him with the butt of his rifle. Seconds later, the first officer raised his weapon and shot the man at close range.

Reacting to the brazen shooting, Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid wrote on X, "Open and clear extrajudicial killing. Shot at point-blank range by police!"

The incident has sparked outrage among activists and ignited a wave of online calls from Kenyans demanding justice for the slain street vendor. Ironically, the protests had been organised to demand accountability from Deputy Inspector General Lagat over the alleged custodial death of Ojwang.

Tensions escalated earlier during the demonstrations when motorcycles carrying suspected hired goons entered the city, with the riders loudly declaring that no protests would be allowed.

Wielding crude weapons such as knives and clubs, the group targeted protesters and unsuspecting civilians in the CBD, seizing handbags, phones, and other valuables.

Footage circulating on social media appears to show the alleged goons operating alongside anti-riot police in efforts to break up the protest.
