Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has promised a reward of Ksh100,000 for Kenyans with credible information on the murder of 18-year-old Abigael Winner Wanjiku which sparked protests in Mwiki, Kasarani.

In a statement on Monday, June 23, Passaris announced that anyone with intel that will lead to the arrest of those responsible for Abigael's murder should either report to the police station in Mwiki or reach out to her directly.

“I am offering a Ksh100,000 reward for any credible information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators behind Abigael’s rape and murder. Please report to OCS Mwiki Police Station or DM me confidentially,” she urged.

Passaris meanwhile visited the family of Abigael and Joshua Steven Maina, who was shot and killed by police deployed to contain the protests that broke out on Friday, June 20.

During the visit, she narrated the harrowing circumstances of the two incidents that have left the two families mourning the loss of their loved ones.

“This morning, I visited two grieving families — Wanjiku Muchoki, mother of 18-year-old Abigael Winner Wanjiku, and Pastor Samuel Kungu, father of Joshua Steven Maina,” she stated in part.

“Abigael was just 18. She was raped and brutally murdered, her body bearing multiple stab wounds. The following day, a peaceful demonstration demanding justice was infiltrated by goons who caused chaos and in the midst of it, police opened fire. Joshua was shot and killed."

Passaris stated that both postmortems are still underway, expressing hope that the forensic results will support the investigation into Joshua’s death.

She also urged the police to carry out their responsibilities with honesty and restraint. “To the police: You are trained to protect, not provoke. To immobilise, not to kill. This is a call for accountability, not condemnation,” she added.

Protests broke out in Kasarani after the body of the 18-year-old woman was discovered, reportedly murdered by unidentified attackers.

Outraged residents flooded the streets demanding justice, setting up a bonfire along the Sunton–Kasarani road and disrupting local businesses for most of Friday.

Police were deployed to quell the protests and restore order, but things escalated when a protester was shot, adding to growing concerns about police brutality during demonstrations.

The shooting, captured on video, triggered a wave of anger online, with Kenyans expressing frustration over the rising trend of police targeting young people during protests.
