Azimio La Umoja parliamentary candidate, Edick Omondi Anyanga, has addressed allegations of shooting his opponent that got him arrested.

Migori County police boss, Mark Wanjala, had told the media that Anyanga, who is vying for the Nyatike Parliamentary seat, was detained after the incident, awaiting arraignment in court.

Anyanga however noted that he shot in the air after noticing that he was being targeted by armed and rowdy youth, who stopped his vehicle on his way home.

While fearing for his life, he noted that he was approached by the youth who ordered him out of the vehicle for an alleged discussion, which sparked fears for his life.

He also claimed that the youth trailed him in a car for some time before the incident, which prompted him to shoot in the air in a bid to disperse the youth.

“I was heading home when I was stopped by some youth who had in an earlier incident sent me away from Nyakweri. They even came to the door (of my car) where I was seated and demanded I alight as they wanted to discuss something with me.

“On Sunday, I spent most of the time in my homestead where I met a number of my supporters,” he said.

His account comes after a police report exposed him as a person of interest in the shooting incident which is being investigated by police.

A local identified as Justus Ochieng was shot by the UPIA party candidate at a local pub in Lwanda Konyango, Migori County on July 23.

Police had seized his gun and 12 rounds of ammunition on the night of the shooting incident.

“He (Anyanga) started threatening the victim while inside his vehicle claiming that he has been going against his political ambitions,” an eyewitness claimed.

Ochieng suffered crucial injuries on his hip and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The two were reported to have been in an altercation before Anyanga brandished his firearm.
