Popular radio presenter, Mercy Wangari Nguri alias Auntie Jemimah has left the vernacular radio station, Gukena FM after seven years.

Jemimah, who hosted the drive show on the station, aired her final show on Wednesday, January 31, bringing to an end a blissful seven years that she spent building her brand through the Radio Africa Group-owned station.

"7 years ago I got into radio, my first love and started an incredible journey of laughter, lessons, growth and networking. That journey has been very fulfilling!" she praised in a statement on her social media pages.

"But just like any other good thing, it has come to an end. My purpose at Gukena FM Kenya is fulfilled and vice versa."

Auntie Jemimah has been hosting two shows at the station, an evening show that runs between 3-7 pm Monday to Friday and another Sunday afternoon show.

"Thank you for tuning in every Monday-Friday for Gukena Drive (Express). And on Sundays 10:00 am-2:00 pm for cocktail Sunday! We enjoyed this one right?!

"Tune in for my last show today from 3-7 pm! Time to exit and explore. It’s been real!" she added.

The mother of two shared the bittersweet emotions accompanying her decision, which she revealed had been contemplated for quite some time, affirming her certainty about the need for change.

"I'm feeling a mix of emotions; it's bittersweet. Of course, it's something I've pondered, and even when I was considering tendering my resignation, I felt the same way. Change is inevitable; it's the only constant in life, whereas stagnation is the only permanent state," she said.

Auntie Jemimah did not however disclose her next move after exiting the show. She joined Radio Africa in 2017, as the company was preparing to launch its first vernacular station, Gukena FM.

Her Kikuyu comedy videos, which gained traction, caught the attention of the radio company, thus propelling it on Kenya's media map.

Having harboured a passion for radio, her calling aligned perfectly with the career path she aspired to pursue.

Initially, she started as a comedian co-host for a morning show. However, a lack of chemistry between her and the main host led to her transition to a popular 2-minute segment.

In addition to being a radio presenter,  she is also a seasoned comedian and a Master of Ceremony (MC) across various platforms.

Her skits which she performs in her vernacular language are popular among the Kikuyu community and eventually earned her an award as the Comedian of the Year in the Afriglow Women’s Awards in 2023.
