An autopsy conducted on the late Geoffrey Gitobu, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioner (IEBC) Returning Officer for the Gichugu constituency in Kirinyaga County, has dismissed foul play as the cause of his death.

Post-mortem results released on Wednesday, August 24 revealed that Gitobu died of a clot in the pulmonary vein.

“We have established that the 58-year-old died from a blood clot. He was also anaemic,” said Dr Ayub Macharia who had been contracted by IEBC and the family.

Dr Macharia noted that the family of the deceased stated that their kin was not suffering from any known life-threatening ailment such as hypertension or diabetes and that only his doctor can give more details on the same.

Laikipia County Criminal Investigation Officer Onesmus Towett said the investigations were not yet complete and that they had taken some body tissues for further analysis.

“For now we can say the death was natural. However we have taken body samples so that we can conduct further investigations to rule out foul play and that is when we shall declare the probe concluded,” said Towett.

The DCI boss had initially disclosed that though his death had occurred on Monday afternoon, it was a sudden death and not a murder as alleged.

Gitobu had collapsed in Nanyuki, where he had gone to see his family. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed.

Gichugu was rocked by violence after supporters of Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru and her challenger, Kirinyanga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici clashed and disrupted ongoing tallying over counter-accusations of vote rigging.

His death came after IEBC Returning Officer for Embakasi East constituency Daniel Mbolu Musyoka was found dead on Tuesday, August 15 after going missing four days earlier.

An autopsy done on Musyoka indicated that he was strangled to death. The exercise was conducted by a team of five pathologists sent to Oloitokitok Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to operate on his body before issuing the report.

However, it failed to provide a conclusive report on the cause of his death. The pathologists also carried to Nairobi some components for further forensic investigations.
