Motorists Using Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Warned Of 60-Day Partial Closure
KURA outlined alternative routes for motorists and both light and heavy truck drivers who regularly use the road.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced on Saturday, February 22, that part of the Quarry Road-Mlolongo/Syokimau area will be closed for two months. This move is likely to increase traffic snarl-ups along the major road.
“We wish to notify the general public that sections of Quarry Road-Mlolongo/Syokimau area will be closed from 6 AM Monday, February 24, until 6 pm Friday, April 25 (two months),” KURA informed.

“This is due to rehabilitation and improvement works along Quarry Road. We urge motorists to use alternative routes and follow guidance by traffic police and marshals."
Light truck drivers travelling from Katani Center were rerouted to Syokimau Airport Road, where they would then make a left turn to connect to the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
Meanwhile, heavy truck drivers from Katani Center were instructed to take the road toward Ebenezer Mall and Tuffoam Industries, which would lead them down to the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The renovations follow numerous complaints from residents about the road's deteriorating condition, particularly after last year's heavy floods.
This road, managed by the national government, links Mombasa Road to Kangundo Road and was paved just over five years ago. It is located in Machakos County.
Motorists using the route have expressed frustration over the large potholes and cracks, which have caused costly mechanical issues for some vehicles, with others breaking down on the road. The poor condition has also contributed to drainage problems, especially during severe flooding.
The situation has been further aggravated by dozens of trucks and heavy machinery transporting construction materials from quarries in Mlolongo Phase 3, Katani, Ngelani, and surrounding areas.
This decision follows months after the government, through the National Assembly, initiated plans to renovate the road.
While addressing Parliament in July 2024, National Assembly Transport and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson George Kariuki (Ndia) announced that construction work on the road would commence immediately.
