CCTV footage recovered by police officers has revealed the final moments of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioner (IEBC) Returning Officer for Embakasi East constituency Daniel Mbolu Musyoka before his disappearance on Thursday, August 11.

A report by The Standard revealed that the footage showed the 53-year-old walking out of the tallying centre at the East Africa School of Aviation in Nairobi on the day he vanished. It didn't show any indication that he was being followed.

An officer familiar with investigations noted that Musyoka seemed relaxed as he walked towards a nearby bus stop. It was established that the official did not make or receive any call at the time when he walked out, as indicated in preliminary reports.

Musyoka has been a national headline after IEBC chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, announced on Friday, August 12 that he had been reported missing.

"Our returning officer for Embakasi East Constituency, Daniel Musyoka has been reported missing while on duty at the East African School of Aviation tallying centre," he announced.

Chebukati added that the commission had received reports that at around 9 am on Thursday, August 11, he was escorted by his bodyguard from his house to the tallying centre.n45 minutes later, he excused himself to make a telephone call but did not return to the centre.

"Mr Musyoka's family and the commission have been trying to reach him without success and his duties are being handled by the deputy returning officer. A report of a missing person has been made at the Embakasi police station under OB No. 24/11/8/2022," he added.

Musyoka's family has been calling upon Kenyans to help find their kin, noting that they combed through hospitals and mortuaries but could not find him.

Tabitha Mbolu, Musyoka's wife, revealed that her last conversation with her husband did not indicate that he was having troubles at work.

"We usually spoke before he left for work and when he returned in the evening. I last spoke to him at midday on Wednesday.

"He admitted that the work was a lot, but assured me that he would come home as soon as he was done. He did not tell me that he had any issues at work," she said.

"We have looked for him in all the places he could possibly be - from hospitals, pharmacies and even the mortuary- but to no avail. We ask anyone who is privy to his whereabouts to come forth with the information."
