Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Wednesday, May 3, expressed the need to demystify the numerous allegations surrounding the servers in place during the 2022 general elections held on August 9.

Chebukati at the same time announced that his maiden election project had received global acceptance at the ElectIntegrity's Annual Conference.

Chebukati praised the Royal Military College of Canada for accepting his project which he believed would enlighten the world regarding various challenges facing the electoral bodies in place across the globe.

The former IEBC chairman intends to use the presentation set for between July 3-7, 2023 to break down the inner workings of the management of the Kenyan elections as well as transmission of the results through the servers, among the list of items demanded by Azimio la Umoja coalition and leader, Raila Odinga, to establish who really won the polls.

"I am pleased to announce that my project titled "Role of Technology in improving the integrity of the electoral process in Kenya" has been accepted for presentation at ElectIntegrity's Annual Conference to be held on July 3-7! My talk will demystify "the server" in Kenyan polls," he said.

"The Electoral Integrity Project (EIP) is based at the Royal Military College of Canada. EIP seeks to strengthen elections in contests around the world through innovative and policy-relevant scientific research that achieves international standing in the social sciences."

As an independent academic study founded in 2012, the Electoral Integrity Project addresses three questions:

  • How and when do elections fail- throughout the electoral cycle?
  • What are the consequences of failed elections, such as for security, accessibility and trust?
  • And what can be done to mitigate these problems, based on academic evidence?

The project is currently directed by Dr Holly Ann Garnett and Professor Toby S. James and is housed at the Royal Military College of Canada/Queen’s University and the University of East Anglia.

It was founded in 2012 by Professor Pippa Norris and originally based at Harvard University and the University of Sydney.

Chebukati has kept a low profile since his exit from office in January 2023 despite Azimio's persistent calls for the servers to be opened, with Raila claiming that his votes were stolen in favour of William Ruto, whom Chebukati declared president on August 15, 2022.

On Friday, April 21, Ruto's Kenya Kwanza coalition expressed that they were ready to engage the Azimio la Umoja coalition regarding its demands to reopen the 2022 General Election servers.

However, National Assembly leader of the majority, Kimani Ichung'wah affirmed that they needed former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga's team to table their demands before the bipartisan committee.

The lawmaker assured that they were ready to open the servers with the certainty that they won the elections fair and square.
