The High Court in Nanyuki has convicted Faith Kanoria Mwebia for the murder of her boyfriend, Daniel Mwaniki Miano, following a protracted trial stemming from a fatal altercation in 2020.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) revealed in its statement on Wednesday, August 6, that the case, prosecuted by Counsel Jackson Motende and Esther Kimani, established that the offence took place on the night of July 5, 2020, in the Likii area of Laikipia County.

According to court records, the couple was involved in a violent domestic dispute during which Mwebia assaulted Miano and threatened to kill him. Miano was later discovered by the roadside with a fatal stab wound to the abdomen.

The prosecution presented 10 witnesses whose testimonies were instrumental in reconstructing the events of that night.

Justice A.K. Ndung’u, in delivering the verdict, ruled that the prosecution had proven the charge of murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Sentencing is set for September 2, 2025.

The conviction of Kanoria marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to address gender-based and domestic violence in Kenya.

With rising concerns over intimate partner violence, this ruling reinforces the message that perpetrators—regardless of gender—will be held accountable under the law. It also underscores the judiciary’s role in upholding justice in complex domestic homicide cases, which are often shrouded in emotional and circumstantial challenges.

The case highlights the effectiveness of thorough investigations and diligent prosecution, especially in crimes committed behind closed doors where physical evidence and witness cooperation are often limited.

The prosecution’s ability to present a strong case, backed by 10 witnesses, not only led to a conviction but also set a precedent for handling similarly sensitive matters. It reflects growing institutional capacity to tackle domestic violence with the seriousness it deserves.

Beyond the courtroom, the ruling is likely to fuel broader conversations around the dynamics of toxic relationships, early warning signs of abuse, and the need for early interventions.

It may also prompt advocacy groups and policymakers to push for more robust support systems for individuals in volatile domestic situations, including improved access to mental health services, conflict resolution programs, and legal protections.

While uncommon, this is not the first instance where a woman has faced legal consequences over the death of a romantic partner.

In 2021, a woman from Chogoria Town in Tharaka Nithi County was taken into custody after allegedly fatally stabbing her boyfriend, reportedly because he declined to spend the night at her home. She was accused of plunging a kitchen knife into the right side of his chest before turning the weapon on herself in a failed suicide attempt.

More recently, in December 2024, a woman from Siaya County turned herself in to authorities after allegedly killing her partner in a dispute linked to infidelity.

Earlier this year, another woman in Nairobi was arrested after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend 27 times during a heated confrontation at her Kamakis residence, where they had met to discuss the deterioration of their relationship.
