Legendary Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge has finished sixth in the 2023 Boston Marathon.

Kipchoge, who led the race in front of 11 athletes to break away, began to drop off after 25 kilometres, finishing at a time of 2:09:23

Chebet's winning time is the third-fastest in the history of the race after Geoffrey Mutai (2:03:02) and Robert Cheruiyot (2:05:52).

Other Kenyans in the race include Augustine Choge, Albert Korir, Hassan Chahdi, John Korir, and Mathew Korir.

Chebet will bag home a prize of Ksh20.2 million (US$150,000) for winning the race. He became the sixth man in the history of the race to defend his Boston Marathon title back to back.

In the women's category, Kenya's Hellen Obiri won her first-ever major marathon in Boston, crossing the finish line in 2:21:38.

With the victory, she becomes the only woman in history to win world titles in indoor and outdoor track, cross country, and marathon races.

She survived an intense battle against Ethiopian Beriso Amane and Lonah Salpeter (Israel) who finished second and third respectively.

Amane clocked 2:21:50, finishing seven seconds ahead of Salpeter (2:21:57).

"Congratulations Evans Chebet for triumphantly defending your Boston Marathon title. Well in Benson Kipruto for bringing home Bronze. Your incredible outing highlights your daredevil attitude.

"Eliud Kipchoge, you are the beast: an inspiration to generations to dream far beyond their potential. Hongera," President William Ruto congratulated on social media.

"Evans Chebet (1st) and Benson Kipruto (3rd), you have made Kenya proud with your remarkable runs in the Boston Marathon!

"And a big congratulations to Hellen Obiri for her inspiring victory in the women's race! Well done," tweeted former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.
