20-time Football Kenya Federation (FKF) League champions Gor Mahia have been kicked out of the CAF Champions League.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) made the announcement on Thursday, July 20, further ordering FKF President Nick Mwendwa to revoke Gor Mahia's license.

CAF claimed that Gor Mahia had failed to meet several requirements, including having a valid license and providing financial guarantees for three players yet to be paid.

Reports indicate that Tusker FC, the league runners-up, could be handed the spot after Gor Mahia will not be included in the Friday, July 21 draw.

FKF had in June announced in a statement that it had cleared Gor and two other clubs to participate in CAF competitions for the 2023-2024 season. It followed a CAF circular issued earlier that month regarding the club licensing process and requisite criteria.

FKF had invited applications from five clubs: The top four FKF Premier League clubs as well as the finalists of the FKF Cup Competition. Gor earned their Champions League ticket by virtue of winning the Kenyan league before the latest move.

The club may also be subjected to a fine of Ksh1.4 million ($10,000) or more as may be decided by the CAF Champions League dispute resolution committee.

Gor Mahia is a football club that is based in Nairobi Kenya. Formed in 1968, it is the most successful football club in East Africa and is also the club with the most supporters in Kenya.

The club also won the CAF Cup Winners' Cup in 1987, making them the first and only Kenyan club to win an African continental title.

The club is named after a legendary medicine man from the Kanyamwa location in Homa Bay County whose name was Gor.

His nickname was Mahia which in the Luo language means magic because the legend of Gor suggests that he was famous for performing magic. Thus he was popularly known as Gor Mahia.

In traditional Luo terms, his full name was Gor Wuod Ogada nyakwar Ogalo which means Gor son of Ogada and grandson of Ogalo.

It is common in Luo tradition to refer to a person based on which homestead or lineage he belongs to. Hence he was also known as Gor Makogalo or Gor K'Ogalo for short which means Gor of Ogalo's homestead.

The club's colours are green and white, and their home kit consists of a green shirt, yellow shorts, and green socks. Their away kit is yellow with green shorts and socks.
