Governor Mwangaza Seeks To Stop Meru MCAs From Impeaching Her

Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza, moved to court on Thursday, November 24 seeking to stop a debate by Members of County Assembly (MCAs) regarding an impeachment motion against her.
Meru High Court Judge Thripsisa Cherere certified the matter as urgent and set a hearing for Monday, November 28, 2022.
In addition, Justice Cherere also ordered the embattled governor to serve the County Assembly and Speaker Ayub Bundi, whom she named as her first and second respondents, respectively.
Through her lawyer Mutuma Gichuru, Mwangaza hinted at unfairness in the event the impeachment motion is allowed to go through.
Meru MCAs had enlisted the matter for a plenary debate on Wednesday, November 30, when they intend to determine what will happen to her future as the county boss.
She added that the motion was incompetent given that it was issued by the County Assembly deputy clerk, who signed off as the acting clerk, despite the seat having no official occupant.
Mwangaza had also called upon the court to suspend letters issued by the deputy clerk inviting her to appear before the assembly for the impeachment motion.
She also wants the court to grant her conservatory orders suspending any action by MCAs and respondents upon the impeachment motion introduced on November 21.
The MCAs voted 68 out of 69 in favour of the motion that wants her impeached for gross violation of the constitution, gross violation of various national and county laws, abuse of office and gross misconduct.
Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora accused Mwangaza of engaging in a series of "discreditable acts" which he added has generated a toxic environment and turned the county into Kenya's laughing stock.
"Lawyers will deal with other lawyers. The truth will be known. The petition will allow us to shed light on the truth. This is the right time because all the allegations that have hired illegally would be finally be addressed.
"I want the electorates to know the truth, and this is the perfect opportunity for everything to come out, which will then set us free," Mwangaza responded.
