The award was officially presented on Tuesday, April 29.

The Japanese government has honoured former Kenyan Ambassador to Japan, Benson Ogutu, with the prestigious 'Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Stars'—one of the Asian nation’s highest decorations.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, April 30, by the Japanese Embassy in Kenya, the award was officially presented on Tuesday, April 29.
Ogutu was recognised for his key role in deepening Kenya-Japan relations during his tenure as ambassador from 2012 to 2020, before his subsequent posting to Moscow.
"The Government of Japan announced on April 29th that the Government has conferred a decoration, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, on Ambassador Benson H.O. What Is the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star?
The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star is one of Japan’s most prestigious honours, awarded by the Japanese government.
Established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji, the Order of the Rising Sun was Japan’s first national decoration, and it remains a powerful symbol of recognition for both Japanese and non-Japanese individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields.
The "Gold and Silver Star" is the second-highest class within this order, just below the Grand Cordon, and it is often reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to Japan or to the world in areas such as international relations, culture, science, and public service.
The medal itself is visually striking, featuring rays of sunlight radiating from a rising sun, which symbolises energy and the dawning of a new era. The Gold and Silver Star specifically includes a starburst badge worn on the left chest and a large sash worn over the shoulder, marking the wearer as someone of significant distinction.
This level of the award is typically given to ambassadors, scholars, high-ranking public officials, and influential leaders in diplomacy or global development. It is a major flex of soft power for Japan, and also a sincere show of respect toward individuals who’ve strengthened Japan’s presence or values on the world stage.
Getting the Order of the Rising Sun, especially at the Gold and Silver Star level, is not just about what one has done for Japan directly—it often recognises efforts that align with Japanese ideals, promote mutual understanding, or enhance global cooperation. It is not just a medal; it is a public declaration that the recipient has left a lasting impact, and Japan sees them as part of their international legacy.
Ogutu, who is currently Kenya’s Ambassador to Russia, has been awarded in recognition of his role in deepening diplomatic relations between Kenya and Japan.
This accolade highlights his efforts in promoting bilateral cooperation, which is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties, open up more opportunities, encourage cultural exchange, and elevate Kenya's international profile.
Other notable Kenyan recipients of the same honour include Ambassador Dennis Awori, who was recognised in 2021 for enhancing Kenya-Japan relations during his time in office. Celebrated Kenyan marathoner Douglas Wakiihuri was also awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, for his contributions to fostering sports and cultural connections between the two countries.
Today, Kenya and Japan continue to enjoy a strong and expanding partnership, particularly in areas like infrastructure, economic development, and defence.
