A robbery suspect was beaten to death by a mob on Monday night, December 19 as he attempted to ambush a villager in Gitaru, Kiambu County.

The thief, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)'s statement on Tuesday, December 20, was part of a gang that attempted to stage the robbery but was cornered by irate neighbours who crushed him to a pulp.

The suspect was part of a gang that had jumped into the compound of the villager, but their mission was aborted when the homeowner heard echoes of their feet clomping loudly in his compound and raised an alarm.

According to the reportee identified as Chege wa Maguta, he was dead asleep at around 4 am when he heard sudden thuds occasioned by what he initially assumed in his dreams, were objects falling from the sky.

"Moments later, the tempo of the footsteps increased clomp! clomp! clomp! followed by miserable bleats of his sheep prompting him to ask his wife in exasperation, whether she had also heard the commotion.

"Wa Chege!, Icio ni mburi ciakwa? ii nicio! (Are those my goats? Yes yes, they’re the ones!)  She whispered back," stated the DCI in part.

The man of the house immediately jumped from the bed, tiptoed towards the bedroom’s window and peeped from one corner, to catch a glimpse of what was happening.

He spotted silhouettes of people moving towards the sheep’s kraal, which had been raided one week ago, and immediately raised alarm as his wife joined him in a melodic cacophony of screams.

"Uuuuuui! Uuuuuuui! Wezi! Wezi! Mutiuke na nimokire! (Come to our aid! the miscreants have arrived)

"The terrified thugs immediately scattered from the compound and jumped over the perimeter while one of them took cover inside an incomplete structure," added the DCI.

The neighbours responded immediately and Chege who was pacing up and down the house screaming unlocked the door while pointing towards the direction of the incomplete building, where the remaining thug had taken refuge.

A 30-year-old man was flushed out of the structure and beaten mercilessly. By the time officers from King’eero police station arrived, the man couldn’t utter a word apart from his village of Kahuho.

The officers rushed him to Wangige level four hospital but unfortunately, he died an hour later as doctors were trying to save his life. His body is lying at the hospital’s morgue pending identification and postmortem.

"Members of the public are advised not to apply the law of the jungle in such circumstances but endeavour to reach out to security officers and accord such suspects justice in a court of law," advised the DCI.
