Three people were killed following an accident that occurred on Tuesday, December 20 in which a lorry plunged into River Kiptetan in Kericho County.

Police who confirmed the incident in a video shared by The Standard revealed that the lorry's engine failed while it was trying to climb the hills.

As a result of the engine failure, the vehicle reversed only to plunge into the river.

The lorry, according to photos that also circulated on social media platforms, was submerged in one half while the rushing water splashed onto the other half while stationary.

"As the lorry was ascending the hills, unfortunately, the engine failed. Due to engine failure, the vehicle reversed back and plunged into the river," the police stated.

Four people were on board at the time of the accident, and out of them, only the driver survived and escaped unhurt when he managed to pull himself from the debris.

The three were trapped inside the submerged vehicle with rescue efforts for them had proved futile.

Their bodies were transported to the Kericho County Referral Hospital ahead of a post-mortem. Police collaborated with members of the public to try and rescue the victims.

"It was a very unfortunate incident and I urge members of the public especially at this time of the festive season, in December where there are vehicles on our road...to ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained," the police added.

Residents revealed that they found that the driver of the lorry had survived and had informed them that there were four people, including him, in the vehicle and that the other three were trapped inside.

On Saturday, November 26, a bus believed to be full of passengers, belonging to Guardian, plunged into River Nyambera in Kisii County.

Several passengers sustained serious injuries during the accident. Reports indicated that at least four passengers - all males - received emergency treatment at the Kisii County Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries, seven kilometres from the scene of the accident.

The bus was heading to Kisii Town from Daraja Mbili when a canter that broke its brakes hit it from behind, plunging into the river. At the time of the accident, 21 passengers were on board the bus.

Kisii County Disaster management and the rescue teams managed to pull the bus out of the river hours after the accident occurred.

Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen revealed on Tuesday, December 20 that the number of Kenyans who died in road accidents in 2022, which he said was more than those of COVID-19. According to him, 4,449 people lost their lives in the last year, a three per cent increase from 2021 when there were 4,271 cases.

CS Murkomen continued by breaking down the cases, noting that there were 403 driver fatalities overall, 1,190 motorcycle riders, and 1595 pedestrians. In the same 2022 time frame, 1,204 passengers died.
