Gor Mahia Football Club chairman Ambrose Rachier exposed the steps to join the secret world of Freemasonry in Kenya, as well as the rules members, must follow.

Rachier during an interview on NTV on Sunday, October 2 dismissed claims that the Freemason group involves a cult of devil worshippers taking part in human sacrifices to gain wealth.

He gave an example of King Solomon in the Bible who was the first Freemason and his successes included building a temple as the basis of those values.

Rachier however maintained that Freemasonry brings together Christianity, Buddhism and atheist religions and isn't specific to one religion.

How To Join

As he explained, one of the strict conditions for one to join the secret society is that they must be recommended by a member. In simple terms, joining the society is not like joining a church whereby any believer just walks in and is readily embraced.

The member would be required to attend their meetings which happen in specific halls, to propose the name of a new person interested in becoming a Freemason.

Selection process

Before new members join, several interviews and background checks are conducted to ensure that anyone interested meets their qualifications.

The group also carries out other checks that include family background and individual traits.

"First is when you get to hear bout it, and you are lucky to get in there — I am saying lucky in the sense that unless you hear it from somebody else, you may never be interested in it," Rachier stated.

"So I would give you a talk, and then go to a meeting and propose that I have somebody that I would like to introduce. We will then invite you to an interview; we talk to you about a few things. In particular, we are concerned about your family, what they will think about you because of all these negative views, and if there is any rejection," he added.

In a process similar to job interviews, the Freemasons meet thereafter to decide whether to admit a new member who has met those qualifications or reject them.

Freemasonry involves an initiation process similar to traditional initiation ceremonies such as circumcision. However, the process in freemasonry is kept a secret and only members of the group know about it.

"No, there is no oath-taking, but there is nothing wrong with oath-taking anyway. There is no strange oath that anyone takes in freemasonry," Rachier added.

Ranks

Freemasonry in Kenya is classified into three ranks: some are grouped into juniors and others are grouped into apprenticeships.

"There are others that go on to the highest degree that you can get to, which is what we call the 33rd degree," the Gor Mahia chairman explained.

One must be a fair craft person before becoming a master in freemasonry.

Rules To Follow

Freemasonry in Kenya is practised strictly by men. However, Rachier noted that members are working on ways of having women join the covert society.

Members are prohibited from engaging in any forms of activities that undermine the values of the society such as corruption.

All members of society can be admitted. Rachier disclosed that influential people such as former chief justices, business tycoons, and politicians are part of society.

Members must also be ready to take part in charity ventures in the country.

"We join freemasonry to propagate charity. There are a few wealthy people in freemasonry, and there are those people who live ordinary lives like me.

"Some of them are businessmen, some are medical practitioners, and lawyers, and there is no discrimination as to what kind of person you are. Some of them are judges of our courts. The common denominator is not wealth it is charitable practices," Rachier insisted.

Members must also attend their services at 6 pm on allocated dates wearing their special attires. The freemasons in Kenya have masonic temples in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Nyeri, among others.
