Murder suspect Kevin Kang'ethe's relative revealed why he decided to alert police officers of his location, which led to his re-arrest after he escaped from Muthaiga Police Station on Wednesday, February 7.

The kin who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity clarified that he sought to guarantee Kang'ethe's safety by negotiating an agreement with the police officers to prevent them from using deadly force against him.

He also noted that the knowledge of Kang'ethe's brother and other relatives who were in custody for being accused of aiding the suspect made him expose the escaped detainee, but on condition that the family members be released.

"I decided to inform the police to ease the process as some of our members are also in police custody. Also for his safety so that he can stop running away," he stated.

"We wanted to save his life by him not being shot, we would rather that he's found alive and handed over to the United States."

Kang'ethe's kin further explained details of how he executed the plan, indicating that the suspect was planning to flee Kenya but wanted to reach out to his associates to conclude the process.

He revealed that the suspect resorted to hiding in Ngong, Kajiado County where he was finally re-arrested on Tuesday and wanted to use the apartment as his safehouse before proceeding with plans to leave the country, possibly undetected.

"So I left the house and distracted him a bit. I could sense that he was tense. I informed him to converse behind the apartment along a corridor. After an hour of talking, I distracted him enough for the police to come and arrest him," he noted.

"He put up quite a fight and police tried their best to control and after being arrested he was taken to Ngong Police Station."

The informant also indicated that Kang'ethe had no phone in his possession at the time of his arrest, but was looking for ways to contact his lawyers and relatives in police custody.

It was initially revealed that the suspect relied on mobile phone numbers registered by relatives to evade police as his phone signals were switched off.

"He told me that there was a deal going through and that he didn't escape but just walked out of the station," the informant elaborated.

Following his re-arrest, the High Court allowed for Kang'ethe to be detained at the Industrial Area Remand Prison after he was brought before the court on Wednesday, February 14.

Kang'ethe, at the time of his escape, was awaiting to be extradited to the United States (US) to face a first-degree murder charge in connection with Kenyan nurse Margaret Mbitu's death at Logan International Airport in Boston in November 2023.
