President William Ruto on Sunday, June 9 announced that the deployment of Kenya Police to Haiti will take place in the next two weeks.

Speaking during a church service in Nakuru County, the Head of State affirmed Kenya's commitment to send law enforcement officers to the Caribbean nation to deal with criminal gangs and restore peace.

“We have a very blessed nation that is being depended on by foreign nations as well, People from Sudan, and DRC are waiting on Kenya to assist them.

"For those in Haiti maybe this coming week or next week we will deploy our Police to maintain peace,” Ruto stated.

The president hinted that the arrangements which had been taking place would be finalised in the coming weeks.

With a deteriorating security situation in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince coupled with gangs staging several attacks and overwhelming the local police force, Haiti has turned to international countries to salvage the situation.

The 1,000 Kenyan police officers will be part of a United Nations-backed peacekeeping mission, with other nations set to also deploy 2,500 officers with pre-deployment arrangements in the final stages.

During his visit to Washington DC in the United States (US) in May, Ruto discussed the mission with US officials, who have urged swift deployment following the recent killing of two US missionaries in Haiti.

At a joint presser at the White House, Ruto and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, were at a loss to explain Kenya’s planned deployment of police officers to Haiti which has been driving up debate in many quarters since its announcement in October 2023.

President Ruto, while responding to journalist Ayub Abdikadir's question, affirmed that the deployment of police to the Caribbean nation was Kenya's responsibility in helping countries in distress.

"I made a commitment to Kenyans to sort out insecurity in the North Rift, and I have followed that with action. As we speak there are 3,000 military officers in the North Rift and 2,000 police officers in the North Rift," the President said.

"We have renovated the first 15 schools and reopened 20 schools that were closed which is ongoing. We have made tremendous progress to create security at home."
