The Public Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday, March 14 denied reports that former Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe was hired as Head of Communications in the Ministry of Public Service.

PSC chairperson Anthony Muchiri clarified that no such appointment was made, let alone the board receiving a request to employ her.

The clarification came following a social media uproar after widespread media reports insinuating that Maribe was appointed to the Public Service docket under Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria.

"For the record, the position will be filled through a competitive recruitment process should a vacancy arise," Muchiri noted.

However, Maribe at the time of publishing this article has yet to delete a post on her Instagram stories tagging the CS, who was to touch base at Nakuru County from 9.00 am on Thursday for NYS-VTC Mashinani alongside Governor Susan Kihika.

While the former TV journalist has a habit of deleting posts that would spark controversy, she is yet to pull down this one, having posted it on Wednesday, March 13, which would indicate that either the communication from PSC was yet to get to her, or she could have dismissed PSC's statement entirely.

What's even more surprising was that the CS was, according to the PSC, quoted to have said "It is true except that I am not the one who appointed her but the Public Service Commission."

The news of Jacque Maribe's appointment to a government job stirred a vibrant discussion on social media and came a month after she was acquitted in the murder case of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

Some questioned the rapidity with which she was able to secure her certificate of good conduct, necessary for the appointment, while others speculated about the vacancy and recruitment process, hinting at a lack of transparency and fairness in government appointments.

Reactions ranged from support for Maribe, with some seeing her appointment as a sign of redemption and support from powerful friends, to criticism and scepticism about the process and its implications for justice and meritocracy in public service.

Digital strategist, Dennis Itumbi, became the first prominent figure to congratulate Maribe on her new appointment, which would have seen her be expected to provide comprehensive communication strategies aligned with the objectives of the Ministry of Public Service.

It is not the first time rumours linking Maribe to government positions have surfaced.

In September 2022, rumours went rife that she had been appointed as the Director of Communication in the office of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Maribe had denied reports that she was appointed to Gachagua's office, even after she received congratulatory messages from colleagues, friends, and fans, whom she thanked for believing in her.
