K24 TV journalist, Franklin Wallah, revealed the final moments of Daniel Mbolu Musyoka, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioner (IEBC) Returning Officer for Embakasi East constituency who went missing on Thursday, August 11.

While interviewing Musyoka's friends and family, the media personality revealed that he had seen him on that fateful day and was tired due to the demanding process that comes with the ongoing tallying of votes ahead of the announcement of the final results by the IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati.

Musyoka left the centre which drew concerns regarding his whereabouts but Wallah was informed that he had gone to get some rest. It was from that point that Chebukati had announced on Friday evening, August 12 that he had been reported missing.

"I saw him that day on Thursday, August 11, and can confirm that he was tired because of the long-tenured process of counting the votes.

"When he left the centre, we began asking questions as to where he had gone but we were informed that he had gone to get some rest. That is when yesterday (on Friday, August 12,) Chebukati gave the information that he had gone missing," he disclosed.

Musyoka's sister, Veronica Njeri Mwangi added that the family was shocked to learn of his disappearance following the announcement, urging the public to bring forth any information on his whereabouts.

"As a family, we were surprised upon hearing that he went missing. We pray that he is safe. We are very positive that he will be found.

"We urge Kenyans to help in finding him. If you have any information, please come forth with it," Njeri stated.

Julius Maingi, a fellow IEBC official who worked alongside Musyoka, intimated that the Returning Officer exuded a calm personality during the three days that they worked together, noting that there wasn't any trouble in terms of his work.

A senior police officer based in Embakasi East further noted that Musyoka had not slept for three days after the vote tallying began, adding that they were following some leads with the help of the last signal detected on his phone.

"To date, we are still on the hunt following his trail. We talked to the family and made resolutions on how they will help security officers to find him. We have dispatched various teams who will be going around Nairobi in general and also Embakasi," he noted, pleading with members of the public to give out information that could help in finding him.

The disappearance immediately caused jitters across the country and added to the anxiety amongst Kenyans ahead of the announcement of the results. Former IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe put out a tweet that read: “Praying that Daniel Daniel Musyoka is safe and is reunited with his family, IEBC colleagues and friends,”

“Keeping my former staff and colleagues in my thoughts and prayers during these tough times. I know what you are going through. Bon courage,” she said.

Akombe fled to New York and resigned in the run-up to the 2017 Presidential repeat election, saying she felt unsafe, and that the commission had no capacity to hold a credible election.

During the same year, the commission's former ICT manager Chris Msando, vanished before he was found dead four days later in Kikuyu alongside the remains of a young woman whose identity was eventually determined to be Carol Ngumbu.
