Azimio's Performance Across Nairobi MP Seats [LIST]

The Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party upset its rival, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in Nairobi County by capturing the majority of the available parliamentary seats.

The coalition, led by presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, claimed 12 out of the 17 available parliamentary seats in each constituency.

The coalition is a consortium of 23 parties, which include the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, Jubilee Party under President Uhuru Kenyatta, Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) under Kalonzo Musyoka, National Alliance Rainbow Coalition- Kenya (NARC-K) under Martha Karua among others.

Some of the new parliamentarians under the Azimio coalition have established themselves as big names. For instance, Lang'ata MP-elect Jalang'o is a comedian who has been known as a radio presenter for Kiss FM.

Beatrice Elachi, who secured the Dagoretti North Parliamentary seat, was the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker before she resigned in August 2020 after she was at the centre of protracted power battles with MCAs.

On February 19, 2021, Elachi was appointed a Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Public Service and Gender Affairs by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Anthony Oluoch won the Mathare parliamentary seat in a contest that saw musician Bahati finish third. This was one of the internal battles in the coalition as Oluoch was in an ODM ticket and Bahati Jubilee.

Here are other Azimio MPs elected in Nairobi:

  1. Babu Owino – ODM (Embakasi East)
  2. Jalang'o – ODM (Lang'ata)
  3. Tim Wanyonyi – ODM (Westlands)
  4. Mark Mwenje – Jubilee (Embakasi West)
  5. Amos Mwago – Jubilee (Starehe)
  6. Beatrice Elachi - ODM (Dagoretti North)
  7. Yusuf Hassan – Kjubilee (Kamukunji)
  8. George Aladwa – ODM (Makadara)
  9. Tom Kajwang' - ODM (Ruaraka)
  10. Antony Oluoch – ODM (Mathare)
  11. Julius Mawathe - Wiper (Embakasi South)
  12. Mwalimu Peter Orero – ODM (Kibra).

UDA captured only four seats in constituencies that- bar Dagoretti South- fall in the densely populated areas of the city. 

They include:

  1. Benjamin Gathiru - UDA (Embakasi Central)
  2. Mwafrika Augustine Kamande - UDA (Roysambu)
  3. James Gakuya (Embakasi North) - UDA
  4. John Kiarie – UDA (Dagoretti South).

Independent candidates: Ronald Karauri – Kasarani

In the Nairobi County Assembly, the Azimio coalition garnered the following seats; ODM 35 seats, Jubilee five and Wiper four. Kenya Kwanza’s UDA secured 36, the most in the county assembly.

Two wards including Utawala and Kwa Reuben however did not hold elections for assembly representatives which were rescheduled for Tuesday, August 23, 2022.

IEBC is yet to announce the official results for Governor, Senator, and Woman representative in Nairobi County. Popular names to look out for include Esther Passaris, Polycarp Igathe and Johnson Sakaja.
