The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that it is offering a free training program, six months long, for Kenyan youth who have at least completed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

The announcement, published on Tuesday, March 11, in the government publication MyGov, outlines an extensive scholarship program that covers tuition, examination fees, material expenses, and a monthly stipend for recipients.

"The program is also aimed at building the economic capabilities of the youth through self-development and improvement of skills to enhance the country’s technical skills among the youth,” KeNHA stated.

The training program will be conducted at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP), Mazeras Youth Polytechnic (MYP), and Mariakani Vocational Training Centre (MVTC).

Those set to join at KCNP will benefit from the following courses: Electrical Installation, Plumbing, Masonry, Carpentry, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Welding and Fabrication, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and Dressmaking and Tailoring. Each course runs for six months.

The Mazeras Youth Polytechnic will offer training in Electrical Installation and Electronics Technology, Carpentry, Metal Processing Technology, Fashion Design and Dressmaking, Masonry, Plumbing, Hairdressing, and Beauty Therapy.

The Mariakani Vocational Training Center will, on the other hand, provide training in Computer Operation, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Tailoring, Dressmaking, Electrical Wiring, Welding (Electric Arc), General Fitting, Light Vehicle Mechanics, Plumbing and Pipe Fitting, and Masonry.

KeNHA is carrying out the project in partnership with the national government and county education officials. Applicants will be selected through a strict vetting process, with shortlisted candidates required to undergo physical verification before the final selection.

How To Apply

To qualify for the training program, applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old, possess at least a KCPE certificate without any formal training at the Diploma level or higher, be able to read and write, and reside in Jomvu, Kinango, Kaloleni, or Rabai.

KeNHA emphasized that priority will be given to orphaned youth, individuals from single-parent families, young single mothers who meet the requirements, persons living with disabilities, applicants from low-income backgrounds, and those residing in informal settlements.

The scholarship will cover tuition and examination fees, course materials, and a monthly stipend for each beneficiary.

Interested applicants can obtain the application form by downloading it from the KeNHA website or collecting a hard copy from the KeNHA Coast Regional Offices in Mombasa.

Applications must be stamped by the Area Chief or Assistant County Commissioner to confirm the applicant’s residence in the designated sub-counties. The deadline for submission is Friday, March 28, 2025, at 5:00 PM, and late applications will not be considered.

Successful candidates will join their respective institutions in the May 2025 intake. “Scholarships shall be awarded based on a comparative evaluation of the applications submitted, the requirements met, and the criteria relating to merit, established according to a specific evaluation chart,” KeNHA stated.
