The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced a special Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train service from Nairobi to Mombasa.

In a statement on Monday, December 16, Kenya Railways disclosed that the train will leave Nairobi at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17 and arrive in Mombasa at 4:30 PM.

"We are pleased to inform you that a special Madaraka Express passenger train will be operating on December 17, 2024, from Nairobi to Mombasa only. The train will depart from Nairobi at 10:30 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive at 4:30 p.m.," Kenya Railways announced.

The train will operate a one-way route between the two capitals, with an estimated commuting time of up to six hours between Nairobi and Mombasa.

However, it did not immediately state whether the train would be valid only for December 17 or whether it would be introduced on other days ahead of a busy schedule during the festive season.

"To book, visit www.metickets.co.ke and secure your slot. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to serving you," Kenya Railways announced.

The Madaraka Express is known for its efficiency and comfort, providing a vital link for both passengers and freight.

This comes even as the company introduced a stopover at Voi for the Standard Guage Railway (SGR) night trains. In a statement dated Friday, November 13, Kenya Railways announced that the change for the 10:00 p.m. night trains would commence on Sunday, December 15.

As detailed in the new directive, the SGR night trains will be making a stopover at the Voi Station for 3 minutes.

"Kenya Railways is pleased to announce that effective December 15, 2024, the 10 pm Madaraka Express Passenger Service train to and from Nairobi Terminus, will now make a 3-minute stopover at Voi station," read the statement in part.

On December 3, President William Ruto directed the return of the stopover for the Madaraka Express train at Voi.

This was part of recent changes in the train operational timelines in anticipation of very high passenger numbers during the festive period.

Residents who ply the route had beforehand requested that the Madaraka Express train make a stopover in Voi to enable them to travel at night and facilitate their businesses.

"I have directed the Transport Ministry, and they have confirmed that from December 15, the train will start the night stop over at Voi," Ruto directed.
