Video streaming giant YouTube has picked 11 Kenyan YouTubers to join its cohort of the class of 2023 YouTube Black Voices.

The 11, as announced on Tuesday, November 15, include producer Brendern Denousse, popularly known as Ukweli.

They will be part of 40 content creators and two producers that will be trained on how to strengthen their platforms.

They will also benefit from funding worth Ksh8.5 million as well as be mentored on how they can improve their skills showcased through the platform to their audiences.

"As support from YouTube, grantees will receive $20,000 (Ksh2.44 million) and $50,000 (Ksh6.1 million) as seed funding, dedicated partner support for six months.

"They will also have the opportunity to participate in programmes including bespoke training, workshops and networking programmes spread out across the year," the statement read in part.

YouTube Emerging Markets East Africa Managing Director Alex Okosi explained that the initiative is meant to equip up-and-coming Black creators and artists with the resources to succeed on the streaming platform.

“For the creators, artists, songwriters and producers that will be joining this third cohort, we will go beyond the initial training to measure our success with them over a long-term period, thereby ensuring that they achieve sustained success,” Okosi stated.

Here is the list of Kenyan YouTubers and their channels:

  3. Agatha Nkirote - Agatha Nkirote
  4. Susan Muriithi - Suzyshomestead
  5. Sebastian Ngida - Kenyan Entrepreneur
  6. Joanne Wanja - Diy with Jojo
  7. Wongel Zelalem - Wongel Zelalem
  8. Juliet Kane - Kane’s Kitchen Affair
  9. Olive Nkirote - ONR
  10. Kate Kendy Wanjiku - Kate Kendy
  11. Brendern Denousse (producer- Ukweli)

The 11 will also be joined by 15 Nigerians and 15 South Africans including artistes Gyakie from Ghana, Kamo Mphela from South Africa, Asake and BNXN from Nigeria and producer MashBeatz from South Africa.

The #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund was launched in 2020 as a multi-year commitment dedicated to spotlighting and growing Black creators and music on the streaming platform by giving them access to resources to help them thrive on YouTube.

Since 2020, the fund has welcomed over 300 grantees hailing from the United States, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, and Nigeria.

This group includes musicians, beauty entrepreneurs, comedians, activists, poets, personal trainers, parents, photographers, gamers and more.
