Dr Walter Mwanda, the close friend of the late Prof George Magoha revisited the last moments before the no-nonsense former Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) died.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, January 24 outside the Lee Funeral Home, Mwanda noted that he was at the time working at the Kenyatta National Hospital when he got a call from Magoha's wife, Dr Barbara Odudu Magoha.

At the time, Dr Mwanda was attending to a patient and asked a colleague to take over as he drove in a hurry to his home.

"At around 3 pm today, I received a call from Magoha's wife that she needed me urgently. I asked a doctor to take over the patient's examination and got into my car and left for his home.

"A few minutes, she called me again and asked me whether I had a blood pressure machine. So I rushed back to my clinic and got one," he recounted.

However, Dr Barbara called him again to ask whether he had a blood pressure machine, to which he assured her that he would get one. This sent him back to the clinic to get the blood pressure machine.

About four kilometres from the home, Dr Barbara sent him an SMS asking if he could summon an ambulance. At the time, he encountered a traffic jam as he was approaching the home.

At the home, he was welcomed by Magoha's son, Dr Michael Magoha, who led him to where his father was.

"I found him seated and proceeded to take his blood pressure. As I was recording, he slipped off from his sitting position, so we carried him to the son's car," Mwanda went on.

The son drove Magoha to the Nairobi Hospital, with Dr Mwanda and Dr Barbara following suit. However, as they arrived at the hospital, Magoha collapsed again.

He was resuscitated by his son, a medical doctor. He collapsed again, a few metres to the casualty section.

"Prof. Magoha collapsed 4 times, he had a premonition that his time had come; he asked his wife to call his son, daughter-in-law, other members and myself

"The medical staff attempted resuscitation, which took a bit of time but they were not able to bring him back," Mwanda recounted.

Magoha's body was moved to the Lee Funeral Home.

"Prof. George Magoha dedicated himself to whatever responsibility he was given, he was very respectful to the authorities," Mwanda praised.

Magoha's death was received with shock across the country and triggered an outpouring of tributes from President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Raila Odinga among others.
