Reformed Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was on Monday, May 29 barred from addressing the media as well as the public following his release after pleading not guilty to seven charges against him.

Njenga was set free on a Ksh50,000 bond or Ksh100,000 cash bail after he was charged with, among them, being a member of an organised crime and six charges of engaging in organised criminal activities.

He was also charged with being in possession of firearms ammunition, government stores and psychotropic substances.

He is also accused of addressing a gathering at the Wanyororo area in Nakuru County on May 11, 2023, to "encourage support" for the outlawed sect, Mungiki.

Other than being curtailed from addressing the media, Njenga was barred from making any contact with any prosecution witnesses likely to jeopardize the case.

Speaking before the Nakuru Law Court, Njenga through his lawyers Ndegwa Njiru and Martha Karua, slammed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regarding his remarks on the Mungiki uprising, diminishing the opinions Kenyans had of him despite being a respectable member of the society.

“Our client had been vilified by the press. In a function in Thika, the deputy president made comments meant to lower the opinion of the right-thinking member of our society as our client is concerned. Knowing the experience that our country has gone through, we do not want to go back there,” Njiru stated.

Gachagua on Sunday, May 28 called out Njenga for allegedly enticing the youth to enrich himself through gang operations, alleging that Njenga was the sole beneficiary with nine mansions built across the country.

"It is a few people taking advantage of young people. As we speak today, he has nine posh homes, in Lavington, Kitengela, Nyahururu and others.

"I appeal to church leaders and elders, please talk to our children. That person reviving that gang is setting our children to be killed. Since the government will not allow it, I want to ask parents to talk to their children not to allow them to be misused for trouble,” Gachagua stated.

Njenga, through Karua, also launched a verbal attack on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) for referring to him as a former Mungiki leader, claiming that they intended to detain him for longer when he appeared at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.

“It was after 1 p.m. and they planned to keep him over the weekend. There have been press reports that appear to prejudice the accused, and we want the court to provide guidance,” Karua stated.

Njenga appeared at the Nakuru Law Courts on Wednesday, May 24 and was directed to appear at DCI the following day after he was set free in line with the anticipatory bail of Ksh100,000 he had posted on May 18, 2023.

The DCI had stated that Njenga was being sought after in relation to the recovery of two firearms and over 90 rolls of bhang, found at a home linked to him.
