NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua surprisingly came to the aid of Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Sabina Chege following remarks about her by self-proclaimed Bunge la Mwananchi President Calvince Okoth alias Gaucho.

Speaking on Monday, May 22, 2023, during the National Delegates Conference (NDC) at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi, Gaucho criticised the perceived rebel lawmaker who was made Jubilee Party leader by the faction led by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker Kanini Kega.

However, Gaucho's remarks against her were viewed to be derogatory, forcing the former Azimio running mate to step in and censure him.

"There's a young man of mine who spoke here and I told him that I'll reprimand him. Even if it is someone who wronged us, whether woman or man, we should not criticise them based on gender but rather criticise them on their actions.

"Please stop yourself from issuing any criticism or insult that is gender-based," Karua stated sternly to Gaucho.

Gaucho during the NDC was promised lunch by Jubilee party leader and former President, Uhuru Kenyatta as he recognized his efforts in defending the former ruling party.

He was among the youth who showed up at the former Jubilee Party headquarters in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, on April 26, 2023, in the wake of heated party wrangles between supporters of then acting secretary general Kanini Kega and suspended secretary general Jeremiah Kioni, in a vicious power struggle that has rocked the Jubilee party in recent months.

“I was not aware our office had been raided but even though I was alone I had to go and defend the property of my people. Some youths showed up to defend their party and resist the injustice that was taking place.

“I am thankful to them and that Gaucho they have been talking about, if I see him again I will buy you lunch, don’t worry. Police were called and refused to come so these young people had to do what they had to do. God bless them and may they keep up the strong work," Uhuru commended.

It is worth it to note that Karua was put on the spot by National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Gladys Shollei who took on the entire Azimio coalition on Tuesday, February 14 regarding its anti-President William Ruto public rallies which went to the extent of attacking women leaders.

Shollei singled out Karua for watching on and tolerating the leaders hurling the remarks at the women leaders, calling upon her to stop the coalition from turning the rallies into events where women are insulted and demeaned to extremes.

"It is unacceptable and appalling what Azimio rallies are degenerating into with our Big Sister Hon Martha Karua watching and condoning the happenings in this theatre of the absurd. At the very least, we ask Hon. Martha Karua to put her foot down and refuse this wanton attempt to turn AZIMIO events into a place where women leaders are insulted, demeaned and subjected to mean-spirited name-calling and uncalled-for sexual innuendos.

"It is sad but true to note that Azimio Boys Club is targeting every woman leader and is determined spare to none in their shameless campaign. If they can insult their own Deputy Minority Leader Hon Sabina Chege who is the highest ranking woman leader in Azimio today, one wonders what they are prepared to do to the Proverbial Wanjiku," she stated at the time.

Sabina Chege was among 10 members, including Kega, who were ousted by Jubilee during the NDC. Others included Jimmy Angweny, Joshua Kutuny, Mutava Musyimi, Boniface Kinoti Gatobu, Naomi Shaban and Nelson Dzuya.

Rachael Nyamaye, Advice Mundalo, Executive Director Wambui Gichuru and Joel Kibe were also axed.

"The party will not shy from taking further disciplinary action on our party leader in order to restore its dignity and retain its rightful place in the country. We will wait for the determination of the Internal committee on the dispute after which NEC will meet to execute its mandate relating to convening of the NDC.

"We expect that a proper NDC will be held no later than July 15, 2023," Kega threatened Uhuru during a subsequent press briefing on May 22.

Kega expressed displeasure at Uhuru's action and questioned why he defied a legitimate organ by contravening the party constitution, affirming to the Jubilee members that their positions were still in effect as Uhuru's NDC meeting was not properly constituted according to Jubilee's regulations.

"It is unfortunate the former president has chosen to be on the wrong side of history by defying a legitimate decision of the party organ and ceased being a party leader on March 14, 2023.

"He has no power to call or chair meetings. Such impunity is unacceptable and taints the reputation of the Office of the Retired President," he added.
