The Meru County Assembly chambers was marred with dramatic scenes as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) walked out after they refused to be addressed by Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Videos seen by Viral Tea showed the MCAs walking out of the House chambers as the governor was giving her official address. She was denied entry into the premises with chants from a few members saying "Hatutaki" (we don't want).

Mwangaza continued with her speech anyway as the MCAs left the chambers swiftly, one after the other.

Here is the video:

Speaking to the press after the walkout, some of the MCAs accused her of rejection, and that the governor has for the last two weeks been ungracious to requests of holding discussions with them and disregarding their demands.

They also accused her and her officers of humiliating them, demanding that they be acknowledged as elected leaders.

"As an assembly consisting of 69 members we have today resolved that we are not going to listen to the Governor's address reason being that we have sought an audience with the governor for the last two weeks seeking to have a sitting with her so that we can discuss on the way forward on how we are going to work for the people of Meru which has been to no avail," said an MCA addressing the media on Tuesday.

"The governor and her officers are out there to demean the MCAs but they have been elected therefore we need to have respect between the office of the governor and members of the County Assembly."

They, therefore, vowed also not to attend to the summons from the Governor until their demands are met.

"We, therefore, feel if the governor has no time to listen to our demands and needs and the needs of our electorates, we are also not ready to give her audience," he added.

"For us to go forward we need to work a working relationship. The governor needs to understand that the country's government comprises two arms of government, the legislature and the executive, and one cannot function without the other one. We promise that we are ready to support her but this can't happen but this cannot happen without having a sitting."

Mwangaza has barely lasted three months and has already drawn controversy across the country. Her decision to appoint her husband Murega Baichu to two county jobs sparked fierce criticism.

She was naming her Cabinet on Friday, September 30 when she appointed Baichu as the patron of Meru Youth Service and the Ambassador to Meru's hustlers. However, she noted that he will not earn a salary for the tasks given to him.

Ignoring the criticism, Mwangaza appreciated her husband for accepting the roles she was entrusted with as an act of sacrifice and how much of a vital role he played in his campaigns.

"You agreed to sacrifice yourself and decided selflessly to work without pay and allowances. By accepting my ambassadorial appointment, you have proved to be a selfless gentleman.

"A pillar of my strength and my support system. Many would like to judge my open declaration, but it is only God, and I know you deserve much more than this," she said.

Mwangaza assured her constituents that there will be no conflict of interest as she takes charge for the next five years, given that this is her husband working in two government roles at once.
