Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya on Tuesday, January 23 presented himself to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Nairobi headquarters in the company of two lawyers.

Viral Tea has learnt that Salasya is currently being grilled by EACC officials after he was summoned by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Twalib Mbarak to record a statement.

The summon was meant to address the allegations that the MP assaulted an MCA during a funeral on January 12, 2024.

The EACC CEO noted that the allegations constitute serious ethical issues, saying if the same are true, they would amount to a serious breach of the integrity and ethical requirements governing the conduct of State Officers.

Mbarak added that the Commission already launched investigations into the matter to help take the appropriate action as per its mandate.

Ahead of the meeting, the lawmaker termed it unusual to get up early in the morning to prepare to travel to the Integrity Centre in Nairobi for an interview and statement recording, though he insisted that all shall be well.

“For the first time nimeamka mapema (woke up early) 5 am to prepare for EACC,” he told the media.

“It's well and it shall be well. Normally I wake up at 8 am because I sleep at 1 am."

EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi weighed in by stating that Salasya is being grilled for allegations of engaging in unlawful conduct that breached Chapter 6 of the constitution which guides the conduct of state officials.

"Based on the outcome of the probe then the commission will determine if there was indeed a violation of the law," he said.

Salasya is being interrogated for assaulting Malaha-Isongo-Makunga Member of County Assembly (MCA) during a funeral on January 12.

The MCA attempted to cut short his speech by urging Salasya to observe respect, to which the lawmaker was defiant.

Salasya however shouted down the MP and demanded that Walunya take his seat, to which the politician declined, a matter that escalated into a full-blown confrontation.

The MP was resultantly arrested and charged with assault, causing physical harm and creating a disturbance in a way that could lead to a breach of peace in line with section 95 (1) of the penal code. This is after an aggrieved Walunya filed a complaint at Shianda Police Station.

The lawmaker was however freed on Saturday, January 13 on a Ksh50,000 bail following his apprehension. On Wednesday, January 17, he took a plea for assault and grievous bodily harm charges and was charged with the former.

Salasya then encountered Walunya while addressing students of St Gabriel Isongo Secondary School in Mumias East Constituency, blaming the MCA for protests that forced the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to transfer a total of 17 teachers from the school after sustained pressure.

The MP, who had been accompanied by other leaders from the area to demand the reinstatement of the teachers to the school, demanded a public apology from Walunya on the spot, blaming him for organising the protests without his knowledge.
